Does anyone know if the Housing scholarship for NMF will pay for you to live in the Bluffs as an upperclassman? I know the University owns them, but do they still qualify as “dorms”?

For those not familiar with them, they are NIIIICE.

Yes, the contract is for the full year, which you must pay for. The NMF pays for most/all (not sure) of the 3 bedrooms, but less for the 2 bedrooms.

I don’t think the university owns The Bluff. I think Bama just worked out a contract with The Bluff to help with the housing shortage.

My older son will be in The Bluff next year - he’s a senior. For graduating seniors, they cancel the summer obligation.

There are some conditions where a student does not have to pay for the housing during the summer months, including study abroad (my son checked into this, because he will study abroad after his sophomore or junior year). He chose to continue to live in the dorms for at least one more year … after all, Lakeside, Riverside and Ridgecrest are pretty sweet.

Having the housing through the summer could be an advantage, I would think, if the student plans on staying at UA to do research or summer study.

Do students at the Bluffs have to pay for utilities in addition to the rent that they pay UA?

It’s hard to say how long Bama will be using the Bluffs for campus housing. Last year, there were rumblings that Bama wasn’t going to use the Bluffs anymore. But…it’s still being used.

I don’t think NMFs have any priority for getting into the Bluffs over other students. Priority is by credits.

There were openings when my son wanted to get in, so that was that. :)

If I remember, the first year Bama used the Bluffs, Bama sent out emails in November to those in honors giving them “first dibs” at moving to the Bluffs after Christmas break. Getting to move there was done on a first come, first serve basis…whoever responded to the quickest.

Okay, thats good to know. I still plan on living in the dorms for the first two years at least, but in my later years, I wouldn’t mind working to pay any difference on the Bluffs that isn’t covered. I actually like the year contracts as well because I’ll be spending all my summers in ttown anyway and that rids me of the whole moving problem.
