Hi! I was wondering if it is possible to complete a dual degree at UNC in which I could earn a BM in piano performance as well as a BA in a math or science. Thanks!

You can earn three degrees at UNC. One major and two minors, or two majors and one minor. You have four years to get it done. If you have AP credit, concurrent credit coming in - and you do a good job of planning your course load - you can easily do this.

UNC has a core curriculum of gen ed’s - you will have to make sure you are taking the best classes for both majors, and get them to “double count” wherever you can. Meaning maybe there is a required course for one major that would also count as a gen ed - that’s a twofer.

Thank you so much! Just to make sure, it is definitely OK for me to do two majors from two different schools within UNC Chapel Hill? If so, that is awesome.

As far as I know yes - you may have to get accepted or admitted into that school and jump those hoops. MY son is doing just that. A major and minor in one and a minor in another school. For example - to double major - with one major in journalism - you have to get accepted into the j school and permission to double major. They want to make sure you can fit it all in first.

Alright, thank you! If you do the dual major thing, do you still have to do a minor as well?

You don’t have to do anything but get one major.

Really? OK, thank you.

The music department has the classes very structured but there are a lot of them that also count for gen ed requirements. It will be difficult to double major in anything else along with music because of the stringent requirements, however. I was trying to do that but switched to math major and music minor. Along with all your academic classes you also have the performance and ensemble classes that are required of music majors. If you really want to double major, start early with planning your courses appropriately and consider summer school.
