can anyone just comment on the level of difficulty being a BME major? ppl get mostly B's and like no A's? never stop studying? i have heard its among the hardest major at washU

i'd like to know also.....anyone???

yes, it's really hard.....get over it

you sound like u have a great attitude (sarcastic)

You also sound like you have a great attitude toward learning... you're obviously only concerned about how easy or difficult it is as opposed to whether you want to learn or not, much less how much you will actually learn. By the way the latin root of student is derived from painstaking, difficult. Earning your BME degree is difficult. And yes, you may not get As all the time and might have to study most of the day. I know this is difficult to believe and hope it doesn't discourage you from following your dreams.

fsb, i think you are really overeacting. Perhaps the OP just wanted to know how difficult the major was so he knew ahead of time how to prepare and what he or she was getting him or herself into. There as no indication that anyone was trying to take the easy way out or anything. I know if I was about to do the most difficult thing I had ever done up until this point, I'd at least like to know about it ahead a time so I didn't walk into it and be taken off guard. You really came off like you were just having a bad day and throwing a b-fit for no reason

Listen, I told them it was difficult and it was obviously not what they wanted to hear. Am I supposed to coddle them, and offer consoling advice? BME is the most difficult major available. I am not a BME major so I can't tell you how to prepare for it, but I suspect the best way to prepare to to accept that it is really difficult, that you might not get the best grades all the time, and that you might have to dedicate almost all your time to studying. In effect, you have to get over the fact that it is so difficult (if BME is really what you want to do).

Sure, nice logic, but telling the OP to get over it is implying that he or she was whining and complaining to begin with. I believe an approrpriate response would simply have been to say "its hard" and leave it at that. This is the inapprorpriate venue to debate about this, thus, this will be my last post regarding this manner. I do apoligize if i misinterpreted your post, but I still think that you seemed unnecessarily snappy @ the original poster

Alright, BME alum here to answer your questions... :) Yep, BME is hard, but then again so are most of the engineering majors. I think in general BME seems harder (and maybe is) because we end up taking all the difficult courses from the other departments, in addition to our own advanced courses. Personally EE seemed the hardest to me, because it's the most math intensive. Anyway - it's definitely not impossible to get A's. I procrastinated a lot, and wasn't nearly as motivated as many of my classmates were, and I still ended up getting many A's (I ended up with about a 3.5, after a senior year of serious slacking off). With that said, I did spend quite a bit of time on homework and studying... there's definitely a large amount of work involved... good grades won't just come to you. Luckily, like most engineering majors, students spend a lot of time studying and working on problem sets in groups, and that helps a ton...

Yes, let's leave it at "it's hard." Now, how that would help someone make a decision that was not based on how hard/easy they want to have it is beyond me.

moose66, my daughter is a 2nd year BME at Wash U and yes it is hard. She went from a 4.0 in high school to not quite a 3.0 in college. First year is definitely weed out year, you have to be tough to stay with it. Many students dropped out of it. She knew this was where she wanted to be and stuck through it C's and all. She is now into her engineering classes and doing much better. I can't guarantee she did as much studying as she should have on a regular basis, she tends to be a procrastinator. If BME is what you would like to study, just plan on working hard.

get over yourself :)
