I am undecided on if it's a good idea to get the BME major to get into medical school? It's very interesting for me and would love it for a fall back option, just in case I don't get into med school. Although, I am scared that it might be too rigorous and will affect my gpa. I am also considering getting my B.S in Biology, but it's not really a major I am interested in, but I am willing to try my hardest to get into med school.

BME isn’t a great fallback option because with an undergraduate degree only you won’t be very employable. Very little of the degree will be applicable to medical school, so you’ll have to take additional coursework, but your curriculum won’t have much space for electives. Plus, as you say, it’s going to be hard.

Getting into medical is pretty formulaic. Choose any degree that interests you, yes, even music. Use your electives to complete all of the prereqs for medical school. Get all (or mostly) A’s. Do well on the MCAT.

Good luck.

This post sums it up pretty well. There are many reasons why not to do BME or BioE at the undergrad level. A famous thread was “Why you shouldn’t major in Biological Engineering”. Its almost ten years old, but a lot of points are still relevant.

Additionally, get an internship or research op. It helps for med school.
