BME Grad Student Housing

I'll be attending Duke for my BME master's this fall. Any recommendations on housing (certain complexes, north vs south of campus, etc.)?

Do most grad students live within walking distance to campus or further away (eg. 5-10 min driving)?

I'm from out-of-state so any help is greatly appreciated!

I believe you can choose to live on campus on central campus which has bus service and is within walking distance to west campus. Otherwise, there are a lot of off campus options:

1) There are a few apartments close to East Campus around Brightleaf Square. Some of them are lofts converted from old industrial buildings. They are not really within walking distance so you’d need a car to get on campus. West Village is one that comes to mind.

2) There are a lot of apartments on 15-501 between Chapel Hill and Durham. It’s close to a lot of stores (Target, etc) but you’d need a car to commute

3) North of West Campus are a few apartments like Belmont etc that a lot of grad students favor. They are within walking distance though you may want to take the Duke Shuttle that runs through that neighborhood and drops you off right next to the engineering quad because that area isn’t the safest of places especially at night. The apartments range from super cheap and sketchy to nice and gated and are often right next to each other or across the street.

4) Head north along Morreene Rd. and there are a few apartments a few miles away. You’d need a car, but it’s a nice residential neighborhood with mostly houses and such. I lived there senior year of undergrad in a complex called Lenox East and I did notice a lot of Duke staff, professional and grad students around me.

I really have no idea how far away most grad students live but from the grad students that I’ve met while doing research in the BME department, most of them had cars and drove to campus. One took the Duke shuttle for a year or two but ended up getting a car anyway because he didn’t want to walk when the shuttle wasn’t running.

Are there any relatively new/modern complexes in the Duke area? I understand the complexes in the Old West Durham/Durham Downtown area are rather old.

I’ll have a car so definitely will be living off-campus.

I’m not a big nature person so proximity to the forest/trails is neither a pro nor con for me.

Priorities:

 1. Safety
 2. New/modern
 3. Relatively quiet
 4. Proximity to campus
 5. 1 bedroom

Any options that come to mind? Thanks!

If those are your priorities over costs, then you might want to check out the lofts at lakeview and west village:
