So, I definitely want to major in something biology-related and BME really interests me. However, I was wondering, if I get accepted into BME and then decide I want to do something else, am I bound to BME? Also, will I have an equal chance of being accepted to JHU but not BME if I am rejected from BME? Or will being rejected from BME lower my chances of being accepted normally?

You can be accepted into JHU and be rejected from BME, but being rejected from BME won’t lower your chances of being accepted into JHU (it says this in their supplement more or less). I wanted to experience BME but my true top major was Biology (pre-med). However I put BME as my top choice and Biology as second. I don’t think it would be a problem to switch out if accepted, would there? I think the real problem is getting accepted to begin with!

All applicants who list BME as their top choice are considered for admission to the University first along with the rest of the applicant pool. Once those decisions are made, the applicants who were interested in BME are considered for the BME program, so applying as a BME major doesn’t lower your overall chances of getting into the University.

That said, here’s my usual boilerplate disclaimer: Make sure you know what BME is before you apply for the program. The BME program at Hopkins is absolutely fantastic if you’re interested in studying biomedical engineering. BME is not a special pre-med major - it’s math-intensive engineering program and you need to love math (and biology and physics and chemistry) if you want to do well in BME. If you find the intersection of medicine and engineering/math fascinating, then you’ll love the BME program, but if you’re only goal is to go to med school, then BME is probably not the right route. (It doesn’t seem like this is the case for either of the previous posters, but since so many people have misconceptions about the BME program, I wanted to include my disclaimer)

Good luck! Feel free to post or PM me if you have any questions about BME!

Ah thank you very much that clears things up a lot
I am into math and physics as well- I think I could handle BME, and it seems worth it to apply for me.
