BME - RPI vs SUNY at Stony vs Rutgers vs UConn

RPI $51,000
Rutgers $35,000
Stony Brook $21,000
UConn $25,800

The above are the schools I have been admitted to undergraduate biomedical engineering program and each cost of attendance to me.

Is each of them worth the money? Which one is the best choice?

Your inputs are appreciated.

I can only speak for Uconn since I grew up near it

Most of my graduating class will be going to Uconn… that isn’t saying too much. They let really low scoring people in their regular school and their honors program is really small.

Although you will be picking your own classes so they can be as difficult as you want (thus with people who want to be there), you’ll constantly be surrounded by drinking and partying.

That said, there are some advantages. There are a lot of really hot girls at uconn and it is a really good public state school. You will receive a great education, just not name notability.

We visited Stony Brook and my daughter liked it very much. It definitely seems to have a good reputation as a science school. My daughter has chosen RPI but Stony Brook was also way up on her list. She was offered decent money and she was also offered a decent amount of money at Stony Brook and admission to one of the Honors Programs.

Stony Brook was her second choice and it was a hard decision. Ultimately the difference in price for her between the two schools was less than $10,000 per year and we decided that RPI was worth the price difference…hope it turns out to be true as one never really knows!

I don’t know that if I were you I could justify spending $51,000 per year at RPI…seems like you would either have to have a boatload of money or borrow a boatload of money.

Even with my daughter’s scholarship at RPI we’ll be borrowing or taking IRA withdrawals…college is expensive!

Thanks a lot, AdvisePlease.
What is your D major? Electrical, BioMedical,…at RPI? What is your comment on these majors?
SUNY Stony Brook is not bad with $21,000 a year for outstater as I pay instate to UMass Amherst.
Any way, how do compare UMass Amherst(I got admitted) with Stony Brook, NEU, Rutgers,Pitt, and etc.?
Your inputs are important. I am more happy to hear back from you.

pat2008 - My daughter will major in chemistry at RPI. My comments were strictly relating to the cost and my general impressions of the schools. In my daughter’s college search we visited Stony Brook, RPI and UConn…amongst many other schools. Of the three my daughter liked RPI the best, for no particular reason did not especially like UConn and she really liked Stony Brook. We definitely had a good impression of the science program and opportunities for research at Stony Brook.

She will attend RPI because a choice had to be made and RPI offered her a decent scholarship.

As for UMass Amherst – my older brother earned his Masters there — many years ago and really liked it and has lived in Massachusetts for over 30 years.

Sounds like you have a tough decision to make. Good luck.

Hello AdvisePlease:
I am interested in Electrical Engineering so far. In second year, I may switch to other engineering such as Computer Engineering and Chemical Engineering. I am not interested in Pure Sciences.
Have you heard about Rutgers at New Brunswick? If yes, how do you compare it with UConn and UMass Amherst from your view? I would like you to drop some for me if you would like.

Good luck for your D.

go to RPI, the other schools can’t even compare with it…

especially stonybrook, its campus and surroundings feel like a community college’s…
very very ugly campus

RPI, on the other hand is quite pretty, but Troy is harsh.

RPI also has really high-tech facilities!

I would pick RPI as well.

The Stony Brook BME has curriculum issues that need to be re-mediated (I am a SB student graduating this year).
