Hello...I'm considering going into Biomedical Engineering. I would like to know if I can go about doing that through doing pre-med first and what are the pros and cons in doing that. Is there other courses I may need to do that is not required in the pre-medical program? (I am just a freshman...)

BME requires a lot of biological and mathematical courses that are far more in-depth than the pre-medical requirements and many of them are for more in-depth than med-school classes as well. Do BME if you want to be a biomedical engineer, not because you think it fits in with your major.

The order of your question is a little off. Premed is not a major but BME is. Thus, you would enroll in BME and then be sure to pick up all the premed classes. Some will also be requirements of the BME degree, but others may just be electives. Usually you need to start the BME sequence in FR year in order to finish in 4 years.

Roughly, premed would be 1 year each of Physics, Calculus, Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, and 1.5 yr of Biology. These should be completed by the end of junior year so you can take the MCAT entrance exams. Also, some premed classes can be taken over the summer and even taken at other schools.

It might be a good option to work in BME for a year or more before applying to med school and taking more time to do the premed requirements and study for the MCAT.
