I'm a student @ Miami Dade College majoring in Chemical Engineering (Pre-Engineering).

I hope to transfer (somewhere, anywhere) and major in Biomedical Engineering. I would also like to go the pre med track, but I wouldn't mind a post-bac year if my chosen concentration doesn't allow for it.

All I know about BME @ the U is what I've read on their site.
Any one with experience in the program? What's it like? How are the research opportunities?

Hey, I’m going to be a senior BME at UMiami this coming fall in the pre-med concentration (although I’ve decided not to do med school and will be pursuing a PhD instead). I think Miami has a pretty good BME department, I know its not as well known or praised as others, although I saw it ranked in the low 30’s one year for grad programs, but I really think the department is on the rise, I know they are adding a few more faculty this coming year.

The classes are tough, challenging and are taught by great professors. The department is also relatively small so you really get to know the other students and faculty one a personal level. There are three different tracks you can pursue: electrical, mechanical, and pre-med. They all have the same basic courses and then starting in the 3rd and 4th year branch off.

All the faculty are involved in research and are all very approachable when it comes to seeking research opportunities. About half do their research downtown at the medical school, a 15 min train ride, and the rest on campus. Some of the areas of research are optics and laser treatments, cell and tissue engineering, biomaterials and drug delivery, diabetes therapy, biomechanics, and a few more than I can’t think of off the top of my head.

Let me know if you have any more questions!
