Board Game Suggestions

Another vote for Five Crowns. We also like Skip Bo, which is another card game.

Some old school games - Sequence, Backgammon and the Game of Life.

This thread from last year is very comprehensive.

As others have said, the other thread is great.

We always enjoy Ticket to Ride (several versions). Wingspan was the holiday addition last year and a bit hit. Also Codenames, although it can be frustrating at time.

My family, especially DH, like scrabble but I get frustrated with the time each player takes to make their word and generally trying to be quiet for them (my issue, not theirs) so do not really enjoy it (having my phone or a book helps, but less interactive than other games).

Risk the game of world domination.

Card game - Russian Rummy good group game

Any trivia game

My kids have been playing Skip Bo which is fun but not so all consuming that you can’t have a lively conversation at the same time.

Parent of young adults/older teen (26, 21, & 17). We have been playing Dominion for nearly a decade and it’s still our favorite family game. The base set is fun on its own, but the expansion sets add depth and variety. Some other games we love: Catan, Outrage, and Trivial Pursuit (original and themed versions). We also enjoy party games like Apples to Apples and What Do You Meme.

Thank you! I had given him suggestions from the earlier thread but he wanted some new suggestions. He loved what I have sent him. He said they were just what he was looking for!

Dominion is hands down my favorite game as well. Many expansions, since there are many card combinations it’s a different strategy every time.

I also like Tokaido.

Our son asked for Descent - Legends of the Dark for his birthday. It’s a cooperative role-playing board game that comes with an app. I haven’t played it.

If he wants a great party game then One Night Ultimate Werewolf. Short, fast and hilarious. The rules can be confusing at first for a newcomer but as a party game you can ignore a lot and just enjoy it. Super to draw people in. They have an app for directing the game which makes it easy. More the merrier.

Code Names is my favorite especially if you know the players at all. Codename Duet is great for two players.

Pandemic was GREAT until we had an actual pandemic. But really the best of coop games.

Forbidden Island/ Desert (a bit harder than Island) is another great co op game.

Wingspan is just beautiful and has good game play after a couple run throughs.

There are tons of new games but some are pretty complicated. These are all 30 min type.
Most take 4 players for best game play except CodeNames Duet and Forbidden Island.

There are numerous youtube videos of reviews of new board games. Main thing to decide is how many players, length of play (some can go seemingly forever!), and replayability (some are “quests” in D&D (dungeons and dragons) style.

An alternative to Scrabble for word lovers is “Quiddler” which is one of my very favorites. Card game (beautiful typography) that suits 2-4 players and is pretty fast (played in rounds). Easy to learn. Sort of a scrabble mixed with rummy vibe. Travel favorite.

I am seconding Carcassonne.

The big box of Carcassone with all the add-ons is a lot of fun.

Another vote for Dominion–my 20-30 something kids were at our vacation place with us last week and that was one game they spent lots of time playing. They also played Settlers of Catan and Sequence.

We’re in a heat wave right now, so a lot of indoor time - and alone time for me today, so I thought I’d hop on here again for a whim and saw this thread.

For a vet school “kid” I’m going to post the names of the games my similar aged “kids” love:

Terraforming Mars - long game (3 hours or so is not uncommon) and very involved, esp if you get the add ons (which they love too). This is the #1 game they will choose to play when they get together as siblings or with friends. We parents play too at times.

Castles of Mad King Ludwig - not quite as long as Terraforming Mars and still loved. Has a max of 4 players which can be a problem.

Dice Forge - medium length game involving changing the sides of dice to get things/points. Quite unique and very loved, but again, a max of 4 players

Parks - not as chosen as the others, but loved when it is pulled out to play

Shorter games:

7 Wonders - the original and very loved, often the top of the list if a shorter game is needed

7 Wonders Architects - the newest one we’ve added and an instant hit - very easy for newbies to pick up

Sushi Go Party - another one everybody seems to love and easy to learn - quick game

Code Names - they play this one now mostly online when they aren’t together, but want some fellowshipping. Horsepaste com (add the .) is their site of choice

We still play some of the older games too, but when they’re playing with friends those seem to be the choices I’ve seen.

@Creekland, you’ve been missed on this board game thread - and others!

It might be short lived. This site is really slowing my computer down at times. I’ve been trying to figure out how to get it to work correctly. When I use Task Manager and End Task to get the slow motion to stop, it often stops when this site is ended, so it makes me suspicious. At the moment it’s working though. It may be due to an ad.

In general, yes, I tended to move on starting back in May, in short, not liking the number of “Hidden Posts” here in the Cafe.

Then a couple of weeks ago our Governor ¶ signed a bill eliminating “scholarship displacement” in PA Public Colleges and I wondered if it had been reported on here - it’s great college finance news here in PA. I still don’t know if it’s been reported or not because I can’t search the forum without it really slowing down

Today is Day 2 (I think) of a multi-day Heat Wave and I’m home alone for a few days so I thought I’d hop on to check the scholarship info - then saw the game thread
We still love games in the Creekland household! All of the current favorites have come from our guys (in their 20s, though oldest turned 30(!) not long ago), so likely would be appealing to the OP.

Glad to know you are ok @Creekland. Sorry about the computer issues. We used to play bridge but none of the other games.

Just discovered a new board game called Moonrakers. My kid apparently contributed to its kickstarter. It’s fun because at the beginning you have to cooperate with others to complete missions, but you can’t count on your partners to deliver what they promise. There’s apparently also a totally cooperative version you can play if there are only two of you which we did not try out. Unlike some games it was relatively easy to learn.
