Boarding life!

Just some questions for boarding school students (and parents if applicable)

What do you do for birthdays? (Your own and friends)
Average nightly workload?
What is like to share a room, and do you get along with your roommate?
What do you do on the weekends?
How often do you talk to your parents and for how long?
Typical day? (In detail please!)
What is your friend group like ? (Diversity)

1) For birthdays, everyone gets sung to at assembly. Usually, one of your friends will decorate your dorm room door and/or make you a cake in the student kitchen. A couple people have also invited a group of friends to dinner out or home for the weekend.

2) Nightly workload ranges between 2-5 hours, it really just depends on what classes you have the next day, how many AP’s you take, etc. You’ll get used to it fast, though, it’s not as bad as it seems! Teachers tend to ease new students into the workload and suggest study tips. Just stay organized!

3) Sharing a room is fine, but I would suggest getting a single if possible after the first year. I got along with my freshman roommate fine, but decided to room with a new student sophomore year. We’re like best friends now- actually neighbors! Sophomore year has been rough, just because my roommate is international student and pretty awkward and hard to talk to (this doesn’t happen to most people).

4) On the weekends, I love having sleepovers, going out into town, and hanging out on dorm watching movies and studying with friends. My school also has trips to DC, amusement parks, etc. every once in a while. Also, Model UN/sports tournaments take up some weekends.

5) At the beginning, I’d talk to my parents every couple days for about half an hour. Now, it’s around once a week (or less) for around 20 minutes. Some people still talk to their parents every day, but I’ve never really been homesick.

6) Typical Day (We’ll say it’s a Monday- we have a class schedule that changes every day):
7:00 wake up, get dressed, etc. (earlier if I need to study/finish some work)
7:30 breakfast
7:50 get my things from my room and head to class
8:00 A Period: French 3
8:55 B Period: Anatomy
9:50 Assembly
10:15 C Period: Free Period (Usually start on homework, check my mail, grab a snack, and maybe meet up with friends or a teacher)
11:10 D Period: English
12:00 Lunch
12:40 E Period: AP European History
1:35 F Period: Chemistry
2:30 G Period: Honors Precalc
3:25 Out of class
3:45 Athletics (Field hockey, basketball, or dance depending on the season. Drama rehearsals also take place during this time)
6:00 Dinner
6:30 Some sort of club/class meeting
7:00 start on homework
7:30 Study hall (stay in my room, go to the library, or meet with a group in a classroom)
9:30 Finish homework (usually), meet up with a friend
10:00 Shower
10:30 Room Check, get ready for bed
11:00 Lights out, in bed
(sometimes I get a light extension until 12:00 to study for a big test, etc. Rarely, though.)

7) My close friend group consists of:
1 person (Hispanic) from Texas
2 people (sisters, Indian) fro Ohio
1 person from Poland
1 person (Asian) from Texas
1 person from North Carolina

Hope this answers all your questions!

wow thanks, this is really helpful! I currently live in a DC suburb, the part about trips to dc spiked my curiosity. If you dont mind telling me, which school do you go to?

I figured I’d give you an additional perspective since my answers are slightly different from the other poster.

For birthdays, multiple things happen:
-Your proctors usually decorate your door
-Some people get cakes ordered from their friends
-Your birthday is printed in the school bulletin

We usually have floor feeds

I can usually get my work done within 2-3 hours. Most people can also get their work done within 3 hours. Lowerclassmen have mandatory study hall from 8-10 so that helps. Also if you are having trouble getting your work done then you can go to study tables, which is monitored study hall from 8-10. It’s for all grades so anyone can go.
3.I love my roommate. We get along really well as do most people. Before you get your roommate assignment you fill out a form telling the school what kind of music you like, what your sleeping habits are like, how clean you keep your room and other things. This helps match you with roommate. There are some people who aren’t happy with their roommate and if you are in that situation you can request a room switch. The school doesn’t like to do this so they will try to help you resolve the problem, but if it still persists then you can change rooms.
4.Because of our rural location most people do things on campus on the weekends. If you play a team sport, on Saturday afternoon you have games so that takes care of 1-4. If you aren’t on a team sport then most people usually go to other sports games. Also, we have Saturday classes at least 2x a month so that takes care of 8:30-12. Our Blue and White heads (school spirit heads) will also host dances, movie nights, or school wide contests. On Sundays, campus is quiet because people sleep in and are doing homework. We have buses that can take people to Millerton (the neighboring town) where you can go to CVS, the grocery, or Harney and Sons. People also have sleepovers or movie nights in their dorms.

I usually talk to my parents once a week for 10-15 minutes. That usually takes care of everything that I need to talk to them about. Sometimes we talk 2 or 3 times a week, but that really depends on what is going on. For example, during finals week I didn’t talk to them at all just because I was so busy studying.
