Boarding Schol Supplies! :)
Hi! There was a thread like this a few years ago, but it stopped so, I thought I would restart it! So- I will be going to boarding school in August, and I am wondering what kind of supplies, dorm 'decorations' for lack of a better word, food, clothes for boarding school, necessities, fun stuff, I should bring! Please list any and all suggestions! Thanks.... A bit more about my school, it is a dance boarding school, (classical ballet) so if anyone else attends a dance school, let me know what they thought was useful! and I will be coming home from Friday night to Sunday early afternoon each week, unless performances require me to stay over on the weekends. I think the rooms are pretty small, and I am pretty sure I only have one roommate. I am scared but nervous about going! Also- anyone else ever have anxiety about going to boarding school? Did you get homesick? Thanks

If you’re going home every week-end and your room is small, you’re in the perfect position to follow the advice of most experienced bs parents and kids and bring the absolute minimum with you when you move in–like just enough clothing and personal items to get through the first week (think of going away to camp). I’d even wait to get to school before buying school supplies, unless there’s something, like a calculator, that the school specifically recommends you buy ahead of time. Once you’ve moved in, you’ll get a quick sense of what you need for your dorm room and for fall clothes. You’re right that you won’t have room for much; I’ve found that my kid has become much more thoughtful and deliberate about what he does and doesn’t need at school, which keeps his room more orderly and useable and makes packing up at the end of the year way easier. While I could tell you what has worked for him, it’s all really very dorm and room specific (what kind of windows? How many doors? What furniture is provided? Does the bed take extra long sheets?)

Thanks for your reply! I have not seen the rooms at all, but I do know we are required to bring sheets and pillows and all of our bedding. Good idea for the absolute minimum! And thanks for answering, I am trying to prepare myself also, if you don’t mind my asking :), did your son get homesick? I am scared of missing home, especially at night. Any advice?
:)

My son got very homesick. He got over it gradually, and after the first year, something switched, and he started preferring school to home. So if you do get homesick, keep in mind that, just like any sickness, it will get worse before it gets better, but it WILL get better! Again, since you’ll be home on the week-ends, wait an see what will help you if you get homesick. For my kid, it was his ratty old comforter, some of his favorite books, and a few of his collectibles. I bet a different person would want something completely different. I do think having a few of those old things from childhood can help your room feel more comfortable and familiar.

Your bed will probably require X-long sheets–check before you buy anything. A mattress topper (one of those foam things) is almost always a good idea.

Wow- thanks so much! I think I will bring a lot of childhood things to my dorm, at least for the first few semesters… Thanks for our advice! It is very helpful :)
