I'm just curious to know some of the styles people wear when at boarding school. For a Californian boarding school is it "Hollister chic" and at NE schools is at all "polos" and such? Not making accusations or saying everyone wears that. Just making examples that are probably not true. Just curious.

I’ll be a new sophomore at Holderness school in NH this fall but I’m from an area in NE where many people go to prep school so the attire doesn’t change much from school to home.

Summer: cutoffs, t shirt , bare feet or flipflops

Fall(depending on dress code): boat shoes /leather clogs with skinny jeans or skinny cords/khakis and either a nice button down or a polo, girls: basically the same but some nice jewelry and either a skirt-mid kneeish length or pants

Winter: huge snowboarding culture at my town and my school so many slouchy hats and bright oversize ski jackets for boys and girls. Basically the same as fall but with a polar fleece overtop and for girls uggs or bean boots and tights with skirts/knit dresses and ski coats or a polar fleece.

Spring: guys: plaid madras shorts with either boat shoes or reefers and a polo or a button down. Girls: button downs or cute dress code appropriate tank tops (nothing strapy) and either tightish fitting bermuda denim shorts cuffed(not in the school room) or a cute summer skirt(shirt always tucked into the skirt) or sundress.

Stores my friends and I shop at: Jcrew, Hollister (for jeans/skirts-not graphic tops), GAP, Delias(again no tops with writing or pictures unless it’s an event you attended or a school thing), L.L bean, Forever 21 and Roxy.

Obviously my word is not law and dress changes from place to place but some things to remember:
Heavy makeup in NE is considered tacky as is bright eyeliner/shaddow
Neon is also considered tacky
Graphic tops with writing is a no and some schools wont let you wear it.

My advice is to buy your basic tanktops and loungwear inexpensively and spend your money on polos/button downs and pants, I bought most of my skirts and dresses from Roxy and Forever 21 inexpensively. I’m not sure if your a guy or a girl but if you’re a girl my best advice is to buy nice, high quality black/grey tights for the winter as nothing ruins an outfit more then tights with a run, plus you’ll be warmer.

At my school near the NE area, it’s pretty similar to what MEsnowboarder said.

Girls generally wear things like jeans (no rips or anything), nice blouses, polos, nice sweaters, dresses with tights or leggings, uggs, boatshoes…for fall. Scarves, more uggs, northface jackets, ect…and for spring: denim and khaki shorts, polos, t-shirts, and the like.

My school is all-girls though, with a casual (but nice) dress code. We usually shop at stores like: Delias, NorthFace, Ugg, Forever 21, Wet Seal, JCrew, Raulph Lauren, and Aeropostale.

I agree with what MEsnowboarder said about makeup being kept to a minimum. At my school, alot of girls wear it and a lot don’t. When they do wear it they try to keep it natural, very few layer it on on a daily basis.
