What are the dorms like for most boarding schools such as Phillips(Andover), Exeter, Groton, Deerfield, Milton, Choate, Taft, etc. Do most people luve in doubles, singles, or triple rooms? Are the desks big, is the furniture okay, and are the beds comfortable?

Best advice we received re: making a dorm bed comfortable:

buy a memory foam mattress topper, and a nice cushy mattress pad (made for a thicker mattress, so it will go around the dorm mattress plus the topper). For less than $100, you can make any dorm bed super-comfortable. We had good luck watching for sales/markdowns on overstock dot com.

I stayed in Nathan Hale(Andover) for about 5 weeks and I was put into a double. The whole dorm is almost all doubles however they do have a good amount of singles and a few triples here and there. Most live in doubles unless you request a single. The desks are not necessarily big but they are a good size. Big enough to fit mutiple books,a computer, and a desk lamp. Plus there’s lots of drawers in the desk so space isn’t an issue. I would say the beds were very comfortable I would suggest doing what mountain hiker said and getting a memory foam. The furniture was very nice I got about 5 drawers and my own closet with 2 shelves over my bed. However Nathan Hale was one of the larger dorms on campus(around 25-35 girls) so don’t expect this is every dorm because others that I saw we’re very small compared to Nathan Hale’s(if you go to Andover request Nathan hale best game room haha)

Is Isham (Andover) good too?

At any given school, there can be a lot of variation in the rooms from dorm to dorm, and even within the same dorm building.

As a new student, chances are you will not be picking the dorm building nor the room, yourself.

@keisha404 isham is beautiful. It was just renovated and is part of the health center(great if you get sick). Any dorms will be good as long as you have an open mindset

Many schools will show you the nicest rooms they have. I arrived this year assuming my room would be similar to what I saw (nice, large) but it is as wide as my bed and twice as long. There is a desk, a chair, and a dresser, plus a small closet. Definitely do the mattress topper! The good news is that dorm assignments are made based on year in school (and number of infractions) so I’m hopeful about next year.

Most students at Exeter have singles. Most Preps/Freshmen are put into doubles unless requested otherwise, but if you’re unlucky you’ll might be put in an emergency double. Emergency doubles are basically rooms that were made for 1 occupant, but because of higher demands for living space due to a growing student body, 2 students get put into it. But living situations get better each year, since room picks are based on seniority. So you’ll always be getting a better room, year after year. Room sizes do vary depending on the dorm, but overall they’re pretty spacious and nice!

for the most part almost all schools are based around doubles, but at the larger schools (PA, PEA, CRH), there is more space for diversity in the type of rooms, i would say that most schools as a new student, you will most likely be an a double. With the exception of the basically all singles MX

Most schools have mostly doubles. Some schools (e.g. MX has mostly singles).

Memory foam mattress is a brilliant idea. Maybe an office chair instead of the wooden ones that they would most likely give u for the room. It really starts to be a pain in the butt after sitting on it for two hours doing hmw (HA.Ha.ha. see what i did there).
