Boarding School in US

Hi Everyone. I want to apply for a boarding school next year (2017), but its already april and i still havent done toefl and SSAT because they are held only in the end of April.Does anyone know what are my chances on getting into schools like Suffield, NMH and Kent?Do they have rolling admissions or something like that?

I don’t know about those schools, but, honestly, it is probably too late. It sounds like you haven’t started your application or anything – filling it out, writing the essays, and getting letters of recommendation take a lot of time.

Also, you haven’t provided your EC’s, GPA, age (are you in 8th grade, or are you transferring?), or anything else. Without this information, no one can chance you.

Hey! I recently was accepted to NMH (although I’m not attending). Your application will be due in January, so don’t stress about getting anything done. I would say to begin the process around late September. You will make an account on The Gateway to Prep Schools (you’ll learn about it), and you’ll have your essays and recommendations on there. In terms of testing: I would begin to practice around July. Take the SSAT test in October or November, and if you don’t do so well you can take it again. Good luck! (Sorry I don’t know anything about TOEFL)

@Nico.campbell I believe OP wants to attend one of these schools in the fall, which is going to be nearly impossible this late. That said, @ OP, if you follow Nico’s advice and apply for fall of 2018, you can transfer in as a repeat freshman or a new sophomore, and you will be much, much more likely to be admitted – at this point, nearly all admissions decisions are finalized.

It also contains a link to an SSAT organization section where you can search for schools that still have openings for this fall.

@cc8912 Oh I see! Thanks for pointing that out.

If you wish to attend a boarding school in the Fall of 2017, then your chances are very slim, sadly. I would 150% recommend applying for the Fall of 2018. Although if you really want to, you can totally apply for 2017. If it doesn’t work, at least you got practice for future applications :)>-

Suffield’s class this year is not full yet, but it would still be hard to get in unless you were exceptional (I don’t know anything about your application, but good luck!)

Looking to apply for 2018 as a sophomore. What are best strategies? Are there schools more likely to take sophomores? Thanks.

@looking at soph

I would reccomend going and stating your own thread because not many people will see your question on somebody else’s thread. When making your thread be sure to list what you are looking for in a school (i.e. student body size, geographical location, remote or in a city, any specific art or sports offerings, etc.)

Pretty sure that Kent and NMH do rolling admissions but are both really good schools so probably don’t leave a lot of spots open and you would need to be a strong candidate who would have had a shot at them during the regular application period.

100% certain that they do not, although there are plenty of schools that do:

Kent must have had lower than expected application numbers this year - no idea what their yield turned out to be. We received an email from them post January 15 advising that they had extended their application deadline. If you are a stellar candidate (and full pay) it might be worth reaching out to them.
