Boarding School Junior Year

Anyone applying to boarding school for their junior year for the 2016-2017 school year? If so, what schools?

Im applying to 7… maybe we’ll see eachother in september!

Just Phillips Exeter for me. My current school is a private school but Exeter is really the only school I considered applying for. And yeah, I’m a sophomore right now, so we will see what happens! What schools did you apply for?

I applied for both 10th and 11th grade. Currently, I submitted my applications to Andover, Groton, and ISAK (for cultural and language). I still consider applying to other schools, both as a regular and late applicant.

As of right now just Blair Academy. However I’m thinking about maybe applying late to some others. I’m applying as a repeat junior. @26443586 @grant1509 @StudAthl

I am also applying as an 11th grader but I have never heard of applying late…what is that? (sorry I am very new to the process) @StudAthl @dreamingsky13739 ???

Meaning later than the application deadline. @asdf789

@asdf789 I am not really new to this process, though this will be my first time applying to BS.

Applying late, as it name suggests, means an applicant is applying to (a) certain school(s) whose traditional deadline has (have) already passed.

“Applying to late deadline schools isn’t just for slackers. There are numerous good reasons to choose a late deadline school. The best reason is that it’s the top school of your choice. However, you might want to consider late deadline schools if you needed time in your [current] year to improve your grades, test scores, classes taken, or activities.”

In my case, I do have a different reason.

Hi I’m also applying as a junior(repeating)! I am applying to Choate, Northfield Mount Hermon, Lawrenceville, Webb in CA, Suffield, and Deerfield. What about you guys? Are you using PSAT/SAT/ACT/ SSAT scores for your applications?

@99721SS

I sent my application to Andover, Groton, and ISAK; will apply late in some other schools, including Choate.

I used the SSAT [for some reason].

@StudAthl That’s awesome; I was unaware that you could apply late to boarding schools. I decided to attend at the end of December so I really tried getting it into the deadline. Anyways, with the graded essay and teacher recs I sent it in on January 14th. Does that still count as late? I took the PSAT but I am not sure if my score is good or not to get into these schools (since its a new system I don’t know what is a good score or not)…

@99721SS
However, there is (are) also (a) disadvantage(s) on applying late.

If you are applying to US boarding schools - considering the school’s deadline is January 15th -, you can submit all application materials until January 15th, 11:59:59 p.m EST. If you submitted it by January 14th, it is within the regular application deadline.

Standardized test scores are important; however, it is only one part of the application. There are definitely schools out there who seem to automatically reject applicants if their scores are way below the school’s average. Despite that, there are schools who weighs all other parts of your application. Just because you did not score high enough means that you are an “idiot”. Every student is unique, and not all students are great test-takers and not all applicants have enough resources to prepare for the test. Many schools consider those factors. Do not let your scores define you; only you can define what you can do. It is not about being on the best; it is about the fit. You don’t want to be in the “best” school if it doesn’t fit your ideals, do you?

Hi, I am currently a new junior at boarding school and I love it. If anybody has questions about my admissions process or life as a new junior feel free to ask.

Hi @evhj04 and @dreamingsky13739 Yes, curious how it is being a new junior at boarding school! My son wants to apply for Fall 2017 when he would be a junior. He expressed interest this spring but it was too late for this year’s application process. Was it hard to adjust quickly as a junior to the culture/academic style when there is SO much going on Junior year with hard classes and college visits?

@dreamingsky13739 - are you going to Blair? He is very interested in Blair. Can you share what you like about the school?

Thanks!

@sunnyschool -

hey! I have not yet decided on which school I will be attending next year however I am going to Blair’s upcoming revisit day. I’m super excited! My favorite thing about Blair is the sense of community. You can feel it the second you walk on campus. Everyone is warm and welcoming and makes you feel at home. The facilities were incredible as well!!

Please let me know how the revist day goes, @dreamingsky13739 ! Enjoy!
