This is a really awkward question but I wanted to know how were the bathrooms set up at Andover, Exeter, Deerfield, and Choate.

Well i don’t go to andover but I went to their summer camp, and in my dorm, their was a bathroom on each floor with only one shower…

Actually, not such an odd question, and not the first time it’s been asked. There was a very recent thread about this (within the past month or two). Try doing a search for “showers” or “communal showers” in the prep school forums and see if you can’t find it.

So everyone waited on one shower? Also do you know if there’s a curtain or is it like a locker room?

@BSDeerfield6: I can tell you that our child had a similar question. He is an only child who has always had his own bathroom and is a very private kid. He opted for a single room and was very concerned about the bathroom setup but, on the second day of school, he called to say (among other things) that he wished he hadn’t been concerned about ANYthing, and the bathroom situation was just fine. In the freshman dorm at Choate, there is a bathroom on each floor, and the showers are private, curtained stalls (not communal like some locker rooms). If privacy is your concern, you would be fine there.

@dogersmom Thanks, I did find a lot of information about my situation.

@ChoatieMom Thanks for the inside information about choate. It’s comforting to know that I’m not the only one who is also an only child and has concerns about the bathroom setup. I hope I will also grow out of that awkwardness once I get there (If I get in).

There is one shower on each floor and only about 7 people in the dorm, so we set up showering times because everyone wakes up at different times. In the pool showers though, they have no curtains or anything, but I think your supposed to shower with your bathing suit on…

This is off topic but @BSDeerfield6 you’re the only person I’ve seen this year who’s applying to all the same schools as I am! :o

17 days left~

At first this will make a difference. And, considering all the other changes that you’ll be dealing with as you start out at a new boarding school, having a comfortable bathroom/shower situation is something well worth taking into consideration.

That said: don’t go overboard with this as a factor in your March/April decision making. Ultimately, whatever your situation is now and whatever you prefer in terms of privacy and are accustomed to, will change over time if you’re thrust into a different situation. That will become your new norm. You’ll accept it or cope with it and then it won’t be a big deal – in days, weeks…maybe, in extreme cases, months.

I definitely recommend being informed about this and having open eyes going into the process so you will know what to expect and can think of how you might prepare for it and deal with it in your own way.

Just remember: in some cases a shower/bathroom arrangement may not be as big of a deal as you imagined it might be. In other cases, an uncomfortable situation may be rough sledding at first…but even if you know this to be certain, I still would not recommend letting shower/bathroom considerations steer you away from an otherwise preferable school among those you choose from. By fall break your shower/bathroom considerations won’t be considerations any longer. You’ll have grown accustomed to the privacy and/or you’ll learn to shower the night before to avoid a crowd, or get up a little earlier, you’ll learn to bring your robe (or maybe your change of clothes) all the way back to the showers, etc. and it will all be part of your new routine.

Generally its several stalls per floor, but there are a few dorms in Deerfield with their own showers, shared only by the 2 rooms on either side. In any event, there’s no real wait. There’s also plenty of showers in the athletic center. You can’t choose the dorm room, so, it really isn’t something to worry about.

Thanks everyone who answered my question!

@magusalex and @alexwoofour thanks for the inside scoop on the whole bathroom situation.
@Cherryrose that’s is funny, but I’m also apply to middlesex
@D’yer Maker thanks for all of that information. Im confident that my semi insecurities will go away after the first month or so. Also I was in no way going to decide which school to go to based on the shower setup.
