boarding school student life

any info about boarding school student life. How much freedom are you granted. info about all schools- stevenson and cate especially. student to student relationships, dating, parties ect.

bump (10 char)

I think I asked the exact same question last year on CC and I was soo frustrated that nobody seemed to give me a nice long detailed reply! Well, after being at Exeter, I realized that most boarding kids don't have the time to creep on College Discussion but hey, I've got three hours of hw ahead of me and a religion essay, so I might as well procrastinate. :]

Actually...idk how much i can really help you because the schools you've listed, I've never even heard of..But hey I go to a boarding school (Phillips Exeter) so same thing right? So you seemed interested about the social aspect of boarding school? Well it depends on the school i guess. And you. If you want to get good grades, be involved in clubs and sport and things like that, you won't really have much of a social life. But if you're just in boarding school for the hell of boarding school (like how i felt today), then it's actually pretty fun. You can basically go anywhere in Exeter (like into town) without having to tell adults like you would at home.

You can definitely date in Exeter. In my dorm, faculty isn't really strict about having guys in your room so if you and your bf/gf want to have some alone time, it's possible. ;] But the problem is the dating pool...Not wanting to sound like sex-biased or anything, but while there's lots of hot/pretty girls in Exeter, hot guys is like..unheard of. Which kinda sucks. There's like social heirarchy here just like in any other normal school. You've got the 'popular' group, the 'normal' kids, and the plain losers. Sometimes living here gets rough, being away from home and having to be around the same people all the time but i guess it's worth it.

Okay haha sorry I'm ending so aruptly but like, my homework is just piling up and if I do't want to stay up until 2 today, I'm gonna go start it now...

I'm applying for Exeter too and this post helped alot thanks.

But i have a friend at exeter and she says that there is a lights out policy or something like that. so how do you stay up to 2? jw

Because people break rules. If you've got homework to do, you stay up and do it. Dorm faculty might check to make sure your light is out, but that doesn't mean that as soon as they leave you can't turn the lights on again

hah that's exactly what my friend told me

Lol ya...Sometimes I don't START hw till 11. No way I can be going to bed then lol.

NMH is seriously strict about dorm visitation.

But you have to give an 'ataboy' to the hardy souls who leave used condoms in the snow in the woods.

<note to="" self="">: do NOT eat breakfast and read CC posts simultaneously.</note>

At NMH are you not allowed to visit members of the opposite sex rooms?

How does your roommate sleep if you have the light on til 2 or later?
Do the kids just get used to sleeping with the light on or what?

A lot of kids will have a desk light so they can turn off the ceiling light, but continue to work. At BS you get used to sleeping with distractions. There's almost always some noise or light, but you get used to it fairly quickly.

Does anybody know if you can stay on-campus during like thxgiving or something? Cuz I have a friend who lives like really far away and she wants 2 go 2 Andover…

Not usually during Thanksgiving- because that is usually a longer break. At most schools though you can stay at school for ‘long weekends’ and shorter breaks like that

No, not usually for Thanksgiving. But it’s okay if she can’t go home for shorter breaks - most schools can arrange for students who live far away to stay with other students that live closer to the school during breaks when a student can’t go home.

How far away do you think she has to live? So like what if she lives in CA which is like across the country?..

or in Canada?

Okay I am so confised as to why everyone is going to Exeter etc. here! I’m going to a school cqlles St. Timothy’s but I’m not sure why everyone else seems to go to the same place… ***?

Lots of people on here go to the top ten schools- Exeter, Andover, SPS, Groton, Middlesex, Milton, Hotchkiss, L’ville, Deerfield, and many others. Because Exeter is a very large school and just about everyone here seems to apply to it, because it is such a prestigious school, and because the kind of student that discusses boarding school on CC has a higher likelihood of getting into such a school, a large proportion of CCers go to Exeter. For the record, I’ve never heard of St. Timothy’s, though I am sure it is a very good school. For this particular thread, the responses are mostly from people connected with Exeter because the OP is.

Does anyone have info based off of the same topic( student to student dating, strictness, student life in general, etc.) as well as info on how good the wifi and phone reception on campus is, but only specifically related to the Putney School(VT)? Thx
