Of course some things depend if you’re a boy or a girl, and some things are not needed. ex. Toilet Paper

Command brand hooks (various sizes) and poster hangers are much better than putty and a lot easier to get off the wall at the end of the year. I just stocked up on a bunch at Target for fall.

^ Cheked, Thanks!

AlicePalace, we got D a locking hard briefcase and a bicycle lock to secure it. She kept it under her bed, locked to the bedframe. She says she was glad to have it and used it a lot. It was big enough for her laptop but I think she only put her laptop in there if she was, say, going camping.

Her dorm room did not lock. In the lockbox she kept her credit card, extra cash, etc.

Both the briefcase and bicycle lock allowed her to set her own combination. Just a lockbox is no good unless you have a lockable drawer or some other way to keep someone from just walking off with the box. Although, a locked box stashed away out of sight is still somewhat of a deterrent to theft. I felt having a special place for her credit card, which she mostly just used when traveling, helped prevent losing it as well as theft.

You don’t have to show up with everything you might possibly need for 4 years. 3 sets of sheets? One will do, or maybe one set of regular sheets and one set of flannel. 50 pencils? 30 pens? How about 10 of each? Miscellaneous school supplies can be bought at the school store if you suddenly need something.

D does just fine with just a laundry bag and no basket. Washers and dryers are free at her school and detergent is even provided.

Don’t show up with a full length mirror. Quite likely there will be nowhere to install it. Can be bought later if you have room for one.

So keep it minimal for starters. There will be a tendency for stuff to accumulate and you have to bring it all home for the summer or pay to store it.

Small stacked set of plastic drawers is a good idea and lends itself to all kinds of uses and locations.

^ Thanks! 10Char

I second the message to TAKE LESS stuff

1) You don’t really know what styles of clothing you will find and like. Take a few pieces and plan to purchase the rest later (online or parent’s weekend). Everyone shares clothes - thus the advice to label everything.
2) wait until Thanksgiving to bring winter stuff
3) Many students like to use the notebooks and binders sold in the bookstore with the school name on them
4) Most rooms are overheated in winter. Bring only a light blanket and a FAN
5) Amazonprime has free shipping and works great for just about anything, including goodie boxes

[ ] Bobby pins
[ ] Hairnets
[ ] Teasing Comb
[ ] White Out
[ ] Nintendo DS
[ ] Nintendo DS Games
^Anything you need to order from a museum can safely be left there.

[ ] Tongue Brushes
^Only if you have a particularly unruly tongue.

[ ] Boyfriend Pillow
^Tell your boyfriend to bring his own. (CM fans herself)

[ ] 10 Rolls Of Tape
^Only if the stability of the structures you are living or learning in are suspect.

I’m giving you a standing O from here, CM.

Having a young ballerina in the family, however, we actually buy hair nets, bobby pins, and…well, not a teasing comb, but I see the point…if you’re a girl heading to Walnut Hill, as the dance subcategory suggests.

Am also curious about the redundancies on the list: why a razor and hair removal cream (IS there still such a thing as Nair?) and a portable and electric pencil sharpener? ATM card and debit card?

Ah, I have been surrounded by testosterone way too long. The only possible use I could come up with for a hairnet was a summer job accessory. Thanks for the perspective.

Okay, everyone step aside. The most important thing, I repeat, THE MOST IMPORTANT THING TO BRING is: A hammock. No, you don’t understand. A hammock is the BEST. THING. EVAR. at boarding school. Even if you don’t have a balcony on your dorm room (any besides Cate?), you can drag that sucker all over campus, find some trees, and set it up. Believe me, it instantly makes you the coolest kid on the quad, it’s comfortable, and there’s nothing more relaxing than that gentle rock (and you will REALLY need something relaxing at points in the year.) It doesn’t even any special knots to hold to up (I’m a boy scout), all you need is a tree with rough bark and the friction will hold you up.

But also Ramen. You will find that this is currency in the dorm.

Hoho @OneKid,

Good one—thx:-)

After just skimming the lists, here are a couple things I DEFINITELY wish I had brought but didn’t:
-lots of tape (for hanging posters, fixing things, etc.)
-more food than you would think to bring, plus something to hide it in
-get a case for your laptop! They can get dinged up carrying them around to class

  • a clock…make sure it doesn’t tick
-a fan…didn’t think I’d need one until I started dying in May
  • your own utensils and even a plate or bowl to use. The dorm has its own stuff, but its so much nicer to use your own especially when everything inevitably goes missing in winter term
-multiple pairs of headphones: an absolute necessity for study hall, and they go missing like crazy
-if you have a black backpack, get a bright ribbon to tie to it or you’ll never know which ones yours

I also agree with that fact that people end up bringing much more than they need. Some things on the list that I don’t think are necessary:

  • a lot of the health items (bug spray, neosporin, etc.) I brought these, only needed them once all year so they really just caused clutter, and honestly someone else or a dorm faculty almost always has whatever it is your looking for
  • you only need 2 sets of sheets not 3 (one on your bed, one in the wash or folded up)
-markers and colored pencils- you DEFINITELY dont need both, not really even one
  • a lot of school supplies (I brought glue sticks and a stapler with extra staples…didn’t use them all year)

thank you, this really helps!

^is your name a reference to a band or something

just a little piece of advice? It could only be applicable to me but bring lots of socks…I feel like mine go missing all the time!!

It may be a little too soon?

However, particularly if the boarding school of your choice is a more “formal” dress code, DO NOT NEED TO SPEND LOTS OF MONEY - many tips throughout these boards and the kids all borrow from one another anyway!

What kind of clothes are good though? I currently have two formal outfits. Two. What are essentials for a formal dress code?

@omgjusttellme Formal dress code doesn’t mean like super fancy clothes, as awesome as it would be to have to wear gowns to school B-) ! The Exeter formal dress code for girls is a dress, skirt or nice slacks with blouse, sweater, collared shirt, or turtleneck (But nobody wears turtlenecks, unless you wanna be pinned as a weirdo ). If you had to pick 4 "splurges,"I’d go with a nice pair of khaki pants, dark jeans, a white cardigan and black pants. You can wear em with everything! Other important things to have are a black cardigan, neutral skirts, and v or crew neck sweaters in neutral or pastel-y colors. Sweaters can be paired with different scarves or necklaces and stuff to make them more distinctive. For more interesting stuff to put with the basics, you can go to forever 21 or stuff like that to get more colorful, on trend stuff. Since I’m really tall, lots of their skirts and dresses are too short, so I usually stick with getting tops from there. I’m also a big online shopper, and have bought stuff online many times just to find that they’re too short. Find the length of a dress and skirt that hit at your fingertips, and use that as the measurement to compare with when you are shopping online. One final piece of advice: lay of anything distressed or sweatshirty. Leave that for vacations and sleeping. It can be a pain to find clothes that work, but you get the hang of it! Sorry for the massive paragraph… I’m very passionate about my clothes

Question: We will be going on vacation in August and are coming back one-two weeks before school starts. Should I buy everything before vacation (better selection, more time), or should I just procrastinate and buy during those one-two weeks?
