boarding schools w/the best dorms

I`m getting ready to apply to some NE coed schools. From those of you who have already gone through the process and have decided where to board, which schools had the nicest dorms? Explain.

BUMP! This is an intriguing topic.

I liked Deerfield dorms. Mostly singles, pretty big rooms. Exeter dorms have become kind of a mess because they over-enrolled, but the actual dorms are REALLY nice. Good heating too ;)

Hotchkiss has some incredible dorms (and some not so incredible). A couple of amazing Hotchkiss dorms are Edelman and Flynn. (My son lived in Edelman last school year. It was more hotel than dorm.)

Anyone have thoughts on the dorms@ Loomis,Msex,Groton and Taft? (boys dorms)

maddog15,

If you decide you want to look at schools beyond the NE region… From the balconies of many dorm rooms at Cate, you can look out to see the Pacific ocean, smell the freshness from orange, lemon olive and avocado trees, and listen to the hum of hummingbirds as they work to sip nectar from the blooming thistles.

The dorm rooms are comfortable and welcoming. And with predominately warm days and cool nights throughout the year, students can keep their balcony or terrace doors open almost 24 / 7. [Residential Life](http://www.cate.org/125/)

CP

@cateparent, I know about your school. It`s amazing. I cant leave the East coast.

i would say either williston, tabor, or shawnigan lake has the best dorms. probably avon old farms has the worst

from hades…i would say hotchkiss or st pauls

from hades i would agree and say eiother sps or deerfield, i duno about hotchkiss ive never been there but i heard some are like hotel rooms.

why is it that all boys schools have crappy dorms?
Hotchkiss is nice. Exeter was ok.

You guys have to remember that your tour guide will most likely show you the absolute best dorm that the school has to offer, so be sure to take this into consideration when comparing different dorms. Also, one school may have just built a new dorm building with amazing rooms but they could also have that falling apart building tucked behind the humanities center that they never show to families, Exaggeration, while another school may have all middle of the road rooms that are comfortable but are not amazing as brand new rooms.

@hopeful. Very true, but I`d still like to know where those amazing dorms are : )
Anyone know about Taft?

i can speak for taft and say that the dorm were pretty good their, there is some single rooms but those are usually for seniors. the dorms at taft are really close unlike sps or hotchkiss where they are all spread out.

we didn’t care for the Deerfield dorms…seemed small and old, maybe just the ones we saw

Your guide will absolutely show you the best dorm [the best dorms are generally newer]. Most boarding schools have variation when it comes to the dorms. So you could be in an excellent dorm that was built less than 25 years ago, or you could have a musty creaky 125-year old dorm. It’s all up to chance [except not really. it’s up to whoever arranges dorm assignments].

I agree w/ Redblue… During my son’s visit to DA last year, we found the dorms uninviting and unattractive. That aside, we found the DA folks warm and wonderful. In the end, people, not buildings, make a school. Based on this standard, DA is absolutely first rate.

Glad to read good reviews about the Taft dorms. I think all boarding schools should keep their dorms updated. I wouldn’t want to feel like I`m away at camp for 3 or 4 yrs.
Anyone know about Loomis?

Although certainly it’s the curriculum, people, school’s philosophy that count most, having a nice living situation and the school’s setting may be just as important in facilitating studying and a great overall four year experience.

In the end, although my son liked the people at DA, it was just too remote. We visited in the summer and it was beautiful, but we pictured those hills all covered with snow in the long stretch of winter and right away it seemed very depressing. There wasn’t a town closeby, to get-away from the daily pressures.

@RBGG, soo true. My sister liked Exeter over Hotchkiss for this reason. Even though Hotchkiss had the nicer dorms, it was way out in cow land.
