Okay, so I feel like Bob Jones U is the most commonly cited bible-thumpin, socially backwards, anti-progressive, crazy conservative and religious, "evolution is stupid" college here on CC. This is probably half because of the silly name - I'm sorry, but I don't think I could come up with a less dignified sounding name than Bob Jones if I tried- and half because that IS the atmosphere of the place. Does anyone here actually attend a school like BJU.. or, god forbid, BJU itself? I'm just curious.

When I was a child, my minister's daughter went to Bob Jones, and I can remember telling people when I was a child that I planned to go there some day.

That same minister reassured my worried mother a few years later when I applied to Stanford that he thought it would be a wonderful place for me. I've always been grateful to him for that.

Bob Jones is a fundamentalist school that prohibited interracial dating until a few years ago. My wife and I would not have been permitted to date each other had we met at Bob Jones. I was happy to criticize BJU for that policy, and am glad that they've abandoned it. But I would find it unseemly to mock them based on the social class of their founder or their student body.

I know. I actually wrote my original post in half-jest (and half seriousness :)). I'd cringe to think of how someone who goes to BJU would respond to the insults we throw at the school so often. And I was curious to see whether the public perception of the school, and other religious Southern schools of its ilk, is anywhere near its reality, that's all.
