Since another thread was begun on Oprah and Stanford, I'll jump in and add that I was thoroughly thrilled to find out today that Bob Woodruff will be speaking at Syracuse's graduation this May. He has such an inspirational story to tell.

Also, it will have special significance for my us since my D is graduating from Newhouse School of Public Communication where the journalism school is housed.

Graci! While I'm proud of her, she intially insisted she didn't want to walk for the school's graduation, only Newhouse's. I think she's changed her mind now.

michone - when is their graduation? I'll bet he's doing several this year. Who wouldn't want to have him? He has to be highly sought after for this.

My son is only a fresman, but I think graduation is Saturday, April 26th. Michigan has a very, very short winter break, so the semester ends earlier than at most other schools.

teriwtt - How did your D like Newhouse? My D is also interested in Journalism and I've heard good things. Wants to look at Medill but so tough to get in there - how is Newhouse?

She was really impressed with the networking Newhouse has with the profession. One of her profs last term had been Colin Powell's chief of staff and is now an adjunct professor there. She also really liked the study abroad semester she had in London, where she took two Newhouse class requirements. It seems like everything is named Bob Costas something or other since he's an active alum. D is a public relations major.

Since we live in the Chicago area, she wouldn't even consider Medill since it's 45 minutes from home. I suspect the competition is equal to get into either program as an incoming freshman. My daughter was invited to join the honors program, and was also eligible for the Founder's Scholarship, which made the tuition much more affordable.

Yes, it's tough to get into Newhouse as a freshman - around a 12% acceptance rate, but any SU student with a certain GPA (3.0 or 3.5 I think) can transfer in for their sophomore year. That's got its challenges, though, since those who entered as freshman are a year up on others with Newhouse requirements.

I can't say enough about the new addition. It is awesome - very technologically appropriate and just beautiful. It doesn't house that many classrooms, but students use the labs, etc. When we toured it last fall, D pointed out one stunning lab that only students in a certain class can even gain access to, so she can't even go in there (she'd already taken that class).
