OK - a parent suggested I post here... our son was accepted into BoCo and Pace for MT - what are some opinions about the schools, programs, etc - He knows the fantasitic reputation BoCo has and the awesome programs, but Pace seems to be an Up and coming school as well and its in NY. Just wanted some input from others about the schools (Plus and Minus's) thanks

If money is no object I would go with Boco. The negatives and positives would be smaller conservatory versus university offering. Boco’s reputation as one of the best programs in the country is well earned.

I would also like to point out that we live in the greater NY area and my daughter is a 2011 graduate of Boco.

student life… NY City VS Boston?
Also, did she have the choice of other schools before choosing BoCo?
thanks for the input

So I am in the same boat as your son. [Maybe I met him Saturday!] I am choosing between Pace and BoCo. (I have dropped NYU from consideration.) I visited Pace over the weekend and am visiting Boco soon.

Let me just say that I LOVED Pace. Great teachers. Great energy from the incoming class. Lots of NY opportunities. The students there have been wildly successful–during their four years the number of kids with national tour or broadway credits is astonishing.

That said–it is not as rigorous as BoCo. At BoCo you train from 9-9. At Pace you just don’t–unless you make it happen by auditing other classes–which you are allowed to do.

It is hard to imagine that the training at BoCo could be rivaled by Pace–just given the fact that the hours spent training at BoCo are significantly higher.

At Boco the class is big–60 kids per class–and there are not as many performance opportunities as Pace. At Pace the class will be about 25 and they put on A LOT more shows. So you will get more performance chances at Pace–There is no doubt about this.

They are both great programs–To me it is coming down to the great training you get at a conservatory versus personal attention and more opportunities you get at PACE. Ugh–I am going nuts trying to decide.

Those are two great programs. Boston’s theater scene is quite active and very good. In fact, the Globe had an article just a few months ago about all the MT and T kids deciding to stay in Boston b/c it was easier to make a living on stage here than in NYC. Yes, NYC is THE place to be for MT. But IF the program at BoCo is more attractive to you, keep in mind that Boston is pretty darn good. (If I were you, I would think about whether performance during your first few years at college is something really important to you or not…b/c you will definitely get more opportunities at Pace than at BoCo.)

thanks guys - Pace is up and coming, but BoCo still produces many students into the work force of theater - 6 to 7 just in the National Tour of Wicked currently. BoCo also allows students to seek work and audition. As stated too; is that BoCo is a theater area that everyone comes to BoCo to see shows that the students do, where as in Pace… its our understanding they don’t have as much in the public shows. Boco is rigorous and at least that is what our S is looking for - likes the warm and fuzzy, but the real world of theater isnt warm and fuzzy. In addition we just read and asked - BoCo is a 5 to 1 ratio of students to teacher - pretty individual…what is Pace’s ratio??

Boston’s student life is what you make it. There are over 250,000 undergraduate students in the city. Boco uses the gym and cafeteria at Northeastern. It’s a great city to attend school. The city is amazing clean for it’s size and age.

These are all good thoughtful comments. My understanding of the 5:1 BoCo student:teacher ratio is that it includes the music school. The BoCo freshman class will be about 60 for MT, which makes it one of the largest in the country. But it is divided up into sections of about 12–so each class you take is about 12 kids, except dance which is larger. Pace will be about the same average classroom size, but the opverall MT program is much smaller.

Pace is connected to the Schimmel theatre which does a lot of productions. If performing (not training) during the 4 years is what you want then Pace will have many more opportunities becasue they have a much smaller MT program and they do many more shows.
