Boeing Engineering Internship/How to...

I see there are a lot of people on here asking about how to get internships and such. I'll give you a few things about myself and to show what it takes, and I'll be glad to answer any questions for you guys.

I just got my third Internship and this one is the best one, it's for Boeing. I actually got one with Olin Chemical in Augusta last summer, but I had to decline because it was too far of a drive. So this could have been the fourth.

I am 22 years old, I go to Georgia Southern University, and I'm a Mechanical Engineering Tech. major. I've got 1 more semester until I'm finally done. My school isn't Ivy, but we are fast becoming a national engineering school. Employers are smart, and they notice who comes from what colleges, and what they can do. We are very technically, hands on, based. While places like Georgia Tech are very analytical and conceptually brilliant. But these companies are sick of these kids coming out knowing how to make something, but can't build a plan for it, get on a lathe or mill and make it.

Anyway, I've got a 3.5 Major specific GPA (honestly the only one that matters). I had about a 2.8 in high school. Average SAT, Average ACT. But what's gotten me everything is my involvement in everything I can.

I've worked for two different Engineering companies before my Sophomore year doing HVAC, Plumbing, and electrical drawings on AutoCAD. They paid me quite well for very little experience. But I proved myself, worked my ass off, and it's payed off 1000 times over.

I've done two separate research projects. One for the school, and the other personally. I just showed them at our undergrad fair and gained a huge response on both. The personal one is actually working out to where the school is helping me to develop my product for consumer use.

I am the VP and Treasurer of the GSU Club soccer team. Maybe soon to be Pres.

In high school, I ran and owned a legitimate Car audio/video business. I dealt with the big brother with taxes, ran adds in local papers and Yellow pages, and advertised at local school; because that was my main demographic. It helped that my dad owned a shop so I did it out of there. There is more that goes on my resume, but these are the big ones.

All of this is no BS. And not to scare anyone, but this is seriously what it takes. And modesty aside, I'M the person you guys are competing with for YOUR Internships and jobs. There are tons more just like me, and they'll make you're life hell when trying to get ahead.

My biggest suggestion is to be INVOLVED IN EVERYTHING. Seriously, employers want SMART workers that they know can balance everything they throw at you.

Questions? Please don't hesitate.

there’s no need to bash Georgia Tech about how its students are lacking in actual hands on experience or not knowing how to make things while you/your school is much better at it, even though I am not affiliated with the university in any way.

From what I’ve learned from my ME classes, design projects always come with hands-on experience(which is more fun, but very easy to pick up even if you’re inexperienced) and conceptual design, which is the hard part.

Anyway this thread isn’t really a “how to get an internship guide”, it’s more like a post to brag about yourself.

Yea, really no need to bash GT, especially when it comes to job/internship recruitment, because Georgia Southern doesn’t even come close in the eyes of most employers… very few schools do. You sound talented enough and I’m sure Boeing appreciated your past work experiences and other pursuits in their desire to take you on as an intern.

But really… no need to write a really long post bragging about how great you are and how you got such a great internship. Like the previous poster said, this is not a How to guide to getting an internship, its just you bragging. Wait until you get to that internship and meet the other interns… while I don’t know you personally or them, I’m sure you will be stunned and humbled by the talent you encounter.

protip: most places don’t like to hire people that are dicks, so remember that when you encounter people at any place of employment.

tell us more about how great you are

Engineering majors aren’t competing with engineering technology majors… The people that go to schools like Devry are

Tell it again! Tell it again!

No, but really, it was an engaging story. And no matter how much you apologize, and no matter how much you urge me (well, maybe not me directly, but this… erm… essay… was so expertly written it seems like you’re talking directly to me) to get “involved in everything” there seems to be no use; people like you are the cream of the crop. And I salute you, sir. You’re the only one out there successfully building yourself to be better than everyone.

Thanks for making me a better person db00019, although I am surprised with all the earning “the only [gpa] that really matters” and working that you had any time to do so.

And one more thing. I might just be a dumb simpleton but I suggest skipping the Boeing and applying directly for Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man in the World; you’re a shoo in.

So what? I’m only eighteen and I’m certified in AUTOCAD, I’m effoecnt in P&ID and Plant 2012 and 2013. I’m also good at monster and DMtv. AND IM DOING AN INTERNSHIP AT A PIPING COMPANY AS A DRAFTER. This means nothing.

^Thread is 2 years old dood.
