I adore the writing in Twilight, and I actually think it’s very good. I’ve read the entire series a number of times as a result. The plot and character, however, and truly abysmal. I can’t really put it any other way that that.

I respect your opinion, UKgirl. But I’d just like to say that writing “‘I love you,’ I told Edward.” 5 times per page isn’t what I call writing. I call that boring.

And can I just say that in the Breaking Dawn trailer, they made the “war” thing between Edward/Bella/Renesmee/all the other vampires on their side and the Volturi seem like it was an ACTUAL war, with fighting and stuff but in reality it was just “Renesmee isn’t devil spawn, she’s an innocent child!” and “Oh, teehee sorry not sorry” and then some random vampire gets destroyed and the end.

It’s not that sort of thing, I mean the actually language that Meyer uses. I’m not really sure how to put it, but I do find it incredibly easy to get into and sort of addictive. There were a couple of times when I was looking in one of the books for a quote to use to mock the series, then got drawn in and read all 4 books in a day or two.
That’s why I love The Host so much, the same writing but with a really good plot. The main character is still far too self sacrificing, but the other characters are interesting and convincing.

i loooove the host!!! team jared! lol actually, i love jared and ian

good thing that’s not how it is, then? i agree that stephanie meyer is a great writer- look at her fanbase and all her success. it’s not just her words, which she uses really well, it’s her pacing, plotting, characterization, descriptions, etc. she can make a really good story; whether or not you like the stories and characters is actually kinda irrelevant. she’s good at “world creating.”

wanda? yeah, i agree, but melanie is like the polar opposite. but it’s not like meyer was trying to make wanda seem so unique, because all the aliens were that way. i think the main point of the self sacrificing thing was to play into the whole “do you think it’s evil that aliens took over earth, even though they’re really nice and make the world a better place” question. in twilight, bella’s seen as too self sacrificing and that gets annoying, especially since there’s no higher meaning to it.

This is such a good idea. I absolutely love books. Will post about my favourites when I have more time.

Lol, I can guess from your username. Feel free! I love books too!

Where did everyone go?

IDK I guess people are waiting until they finish the spectacular now?
Also I’ve been doing college apps so I haven’t been reading anything exciting.

The most exciting literary-related thing I’ve done this past week is get stuck and unstuck on my Hamlet essay for school. :/

I haven’t been getting much reading done either. I have to read The Killer Angels for APUSH. Along with all the other APUSH homework I have. And all the other homework from other classes. Hooray for junior year.

I didn’t personally take APUSH, but yeah I’ve heard insane things about the amount of HW, at least at my school.

My friends really want me to catch up on all the Percy Jackson related books. Basically starting from The Mark of Athena… yup pretty behind

Well this thread was a success…

o.o
ikr
anyways for school I’m now reading Brave New World but I’m not going to be able to read anything else for the next 18 days.

Same here. I have to read The Killer Angels for APUSH and then Night for AP Lang. Fun stuff.

Has everyone seen Catching Fire??? I watched it this weekend and omg it was so good.

I haven’t even seen the first movie yet… I’ve heard really good things about Catching Fire, though, so I’ll probably see it as soon as I finish my finals to celebrate.

You have to see the first movie before seeing Catching Fire. But yes, you’ll love it, it stuck to the book for the most part and it was great.

Which books would you guys recommend for a freshman, one that is fun and helps you learn some vocab as well? :)

Aw, okay. Then I’ll have to find the first movie somewhere first and then I’ll go see Catching Fire possibly on the same day. That’s good to hear, there’s some books-to-movies I don’t agree with since they leave out some much.

@apandia: hmmm well I feel like I didn’t really learn vocab from books I’ve read. I don’t actually remember how I learned the vocab I do know but I feel like it wasn’t from books. But the books I feel like strengthened my critical reading skills tend to be classics. Some of the classics I like and/or read in freshman year: Tale of Two Cities, Great Expectations, Jane Eyre, Northanger Abbey and Les Miserables. A lot of them are rather lengthy but sometimes you can skip like the first 1/3 or so.

The classics are definitely good books to read to improve your CR score. I wish I read them before.

Why can’t teachers give me time to read Divergent? I WANT TO READ DIVERGENT.

So, I realize this thread has been dead for a while, but yeah, I’m finally reading actual books! (Not crappy fanfiction).

Which is kind of funny, because I’m reading a book called Fangirl. It’s pretty cool, they kind of satirized Harry Potter and its fandom.

Also I have Divergent in epub but I haven’t gotten around to reading it yet. I’ll definitely read it over break though.
