I need to update my book list and need ideas for a good reader of 13. He’s read Tolkien’s books, Ready Player One and Maze Runner and likes them. I’m his grandma so I try and find interesting and fun books for him to read. Thanks!
The Redwall Series, CS Lewis Lion/Witch/Wardrobe series?
At that age my S liked very plot driven stories – consider some Ian Flemming James Bond books (and you can maybe watch the movie together as well?).
Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy (trilogy), Neil Gaiman (Good Omens, etc.), and Terry Prachett (Discworld).
DId he understand the Tolkien books? If so he can move on to Treasure Island, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthurs Court, Three musketeers, etc
Also adding - The Philip Pullman series His Dark Materials and The Eragon series. (but as these are very popular with that age group he might have already read them).
George’s Secret Key to the Universe, first in a series by Lucy and Stephen Hawking.
A Wizard of Earthsea by Ursula K. Le Guin
The Dune books.
Ender’s Game
James Patterson Maximum Ride series
Red wall series—My S enjoyed it but I could never read it.
In middle school, my kids read Hatchet by Gary Poulsen and his other books. Main character (and almost only one, unless you include the forest critters) is a 13 year old boy. It’s an easy read… I liked it too
The Dark is Rising series by Susan Cooper and another vote for His Dark Materials by Pullman.
I found this article that might be helpful:
Indian in the Cupboard series is also fun and an easy read.
Ender’s Game. Bartimaeus and Lockwood series by Stroud. My 13 yo nephew just finished the entire Wheel of Time series (it’s a lot). Sanderson’s Stormlight series (not yet complete). Count of Monte Cristo.
I think the kid should go to the library and pick whatever catches his eye. That is a good way of generating interest. Make sure he picks 5-10 books a week. Maybe you could also read jointly to give him company.
@onward My sons really enjoyed the John Flanagan “Ranger’s Apprentice” and “Brotherband Chronicles” series. They were recommended from my sister-in-law. We have since recommended to my nephew who really enjoyed it… and my niece who really enjoyed it and the spin off “Royal Ranger” series.
Thanks, everyone! I had forgotten some of these and they are sitting in our bookshelves (Wheel of Time, Eragon, His Dark Matters). I’m going to write them down and confer with his mom. They do go to school the library a lot but I like to give a book now and then. Thanks again!
He might like Legendborn. It’s a spin on Arthurian legend with a black female protagonist. There’s a second book in the series too.
