books and personal expenses

Alright, so the estimated cost of attendance for UCSD this year is a little over around $21,000. Out of this, the tuition and board will add up to about $17,000, and UCSD estimates that the rest of $4,000 will go to books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses.

Well, my question is, do average UCSD freshmen students really spend about 4000 dollars on books, personal expenses, and transportation? Does anyone have a estimate of how much they really spend on those things in reality?

I'm curious because I know someone at UCI who received workstudy for financial aid but he actually never did it. What happened was, he didn't spend too much money on those things that i previously mentioned, so he had money left over from his financial aid award grants and used that money to cover the workstudy that he didn't do....

Here's how to not spend $4k:

don't buy a train ticket home every weekend. Or fly home whenever you like.
buy used books whenever possible, especially from other students (cheaper than bookstore) or online.
don't decide that you want to go to upscale restaurants every weekend.

Out of the $4000 they allocated, I spent less than $2000 for the year. Probably around the $1600-1800 area. It's really not hard at all (You'd have to buy all new books every quarter, take the train home every weekend and shop at Neiman Marcus to get up to $4000). Fall quarter will hit the hardest since you realize that you need a lot of stuff.

Yeah, although I actually spent close to four thousand dollars my first year, it's really hard to do. I went out and ate at least once a day haha. I love food too much and most of the food at UCSD isn't that great. I rarely ate there, so I had hundreds of dollars left over in my dining plan; I just ended up taking my friends out to dinner and stuff with the left overs.

In short, just don't go out too much.

No, $4,000 is a gross overestimate.

I spent about $50 on extra food. I spent a few hundred on books. I bought a plane ticket for winter break.
