Books...bookstore, or from a student?

About a week ago, I got my book list in the mail from my school. There are a lot of books, and we can either buy them separtely, or in a bundle from the bookstore at a discounted rate. The discounted price for the bundle is about $600, but, as I found out today, it contains the majority of the books we need for the next 3 semesters (both semesters this year, and the fall semester of next year), and it contains e-book versions of all the books.

Should I buy the bundle, or should I buy them separately from the girl/online for the ones she doesn't have? I bought my A&P book from this girl last year, and she only asked $50 for it (it costs about $200, and it was pretty much brand new, as are her nursing books)...so I'm sure I would get more great deals from her!

I'm thinking I should probably just get the bundle because then I'm sure that everything is brand new and that I have the right version of everything...and $600 for 3 semesters is actually really good! Plus, having an e-version of everything would be nice because then I won't always have to carry my books around. I can access them on my laptop, or if I decide to get one (which I probably will), iPod Touch.

What do you think?

look online first. amazon has great deals.

Why would I look online rather than getting them from a student I know? Especially when buying from said student means no shipping…

Also, the bookstore package is actually a GREAT deal! It’s 6 books (both hard copy and e-book) and Mosby’s Nursing Consult for only $600. I doubt I could do better than that on Amazon anyway considering most of the books cost about $100, even online.

It sounds like you’ve answered your own question.

If I was you, I’d do the bundle (and I’m an adamant supporter of buying books online rather than through a bookstore).

You might want to check first before jumping to conclusions…I’ve saved a ton of money ordering online. Most college bookstores have a 30% mark up.

I looked online. Most of my books aren’t actually any cheaper online than at the bookstore.

I’m also in nursing and I found the chem book I need on amazon for $4.98, compared to the $100 my bookstore was trying to sell it for! But if your books arent cheaper on Amazon, I would buy the bundle.

I haven’t really found anything much cheaper than the bookstore…you know, maybe a couple dollars different, but the shipping makes up for that! The other thing is, because the bundle includes the e-books, it’s like I’m getting 2 copies for the price of one.

Just do the bundle. $200/semester isn’t bad.

There’s no info here–how are we supposed to answer? Typically, the correct solution is to buy the books online, but you’re insisting that’s not the solution.

How many books are there in the bundle? What type of books are they–science, nursing, history, english/philosophy texts, etc., The prices vary dramatically. How is the bundle satisfying three semesters…Are their 3 semester’s worth of books or are most of the books you’re using this semester usable for the next 3 (calc, etc.,)?

$200/semester sounds very cheap for a bookstore price, but we have no idea what you’re buying.

^ Um…yes, you do, if you read the entire thread…or even carefully read my first post.

The books are nursing books. I’m a nursing major. I’ll need all of the books in the bundle for the next year and a half.

$4.98 textbook is probably in ****ty condition

First of all, add up the prices. You said it will be $600 for the bookstore. Now take the cheapest price your friends will offer for the books (add them up if you’re buying each book separately from them), and then compare. Now, before you make a decision, take buyback into consideration. What kind of textbook buyback does your campus bookstore offer? Even if the $600 bundle is more expensive, if you can’t sell your friends books back but you can sell the bundle back to the bookstore, then just buy the bundle.

By the time I’ll be looking to sell my books, there will probably be new editions required, so the bookstore won’t buy them and online would be the best option for selling them. But honestly, I’ll probably keep my books…most nursing majors do because they are good references for the future.

An upside to buying from the bookstore is that they usually buy them back.

I don’t know all of the books in the bundle, so I can’t say that Amazon is certainly cheaper, but the one that you’ve named (Mosby’s Nursing Consult) is 5.00 +3.99 shipping NEW on Amazon.

Automatically searches a bunch of websites (including amazon) for the books you put in. The main downside is that the cheapest will often be international editions, which have limited resale values. It’s also best to use the ISBN number to search.

In the bundle, the nursing consult is free.

ThisCouldBeHeaven - I use bigwords.com (same idea as the website you posted).

No it isn’t. I ****ing hate that; so many people have no idea how money works.

If I give you 100 dollars for 2 books, then I’ve bought 2 books. If I don’t take that deal, and you say “I’ll throw in a third, free” I’M NO LONGER BUYING THE TWO BOOKS. The new question is “do I want to spend 100 dollars on these THREE books.” Calling it free makes you look like an idiot.

Also, I know I’m being an ****, but it’s an important life lesson. Free * isn’t free if you’re paying money to obtain it.

@ long, ikr? I’m going to have to get a book/workbook for my japanese class. Its much cheaper to go through the bookstore gasp then on amazon. I would have to pay 150 for something i could by for 128 at the bookstore.

What i do is look at the price, devide it by say 2. So two books would be 50 each. Throw in a third and its 33.33333333333_… So in a way you get a discount but it isn’t the same as 'free"
