Books/CD/DVD clubs::Get X free, but buy Y more

Does anyone here subscribe to any of those Book/cd/dvd clubs? Where you buy 5 or so books for $1, but you have to buy 5 more at regular ("discounted") prices in the next 2 or so years?
ie. Columbia House, BMG Music services, Historybookclub.com

Does it actually work out being cheaper (with all the S+H charges)? Is it worth it? Would you recommend it for college?

I plan to buy some dvds for college, and a lot of books to supplement my classes. Would it be better to subscribe to these clubs that to buy separately in stores?

BMG you don't actually have to buy any for regular price. You can get the first 5 or so free, and never buy any ever again. You have to buy one to get the other 7 free though. Shipping is usually about $3 per cd, so it adds up.

That changed since I did it. I tried BMG back in 1994 and if you didn't send the damn flyer back saying you ** didn't ** want the album of the month, they sent it to you anyways. I would recommend against all music clubs if you are only a casual listener.
