Books & Financial Aid

Are we allowed to order the books for our classes as soon as we want? Or must we wait until after a certain date? I want to order the math 53 book asap.

Also, regarding paying for the books. It says in the budget that books are included in the estimated 26k budget.

Undergraduate Budgets 08-09

So does that mean that they will pay for my books? How does it work; do I just pay by credit card first and they will reimburse me? Thanks for any input!

The math 53 book may be custom berkeley edition so i wouldn't buy it yet.

Pay by CC now and they will give you money back later.

I want to buy the math53 book so I can start reviewing some of the material so when fall comes around i'll have an easier time.

"Pay by CC now and they will give you money back later."

Must I buy from Berkeley bookstore? Will they reimburse me if I buy, say, from Amazon?

They don't reimburse you directly for each purchase you make. Basically, the school assesses how much is owed to the school through tuition, housing, and fees and they credit your scholarships for these fees first. After that, if you have any scholarships left over that aren't used up yet, they get sent to you via a check or electronic deposit. That's your "reimbursement". But you might not get any "reimbursement" if you don't have enough aid/scholarships to cover it.

Ah, I understand now. So, as an example, if i buy a book now, and it so happens that my tuition, housing, and fees eat up all my financial aid, and they don't send me a check since there's no aid left, I am out of luck? Just have to pay out of pocket?

Yes you have to pay out of pocket. It does indeed suck. But at least you get some aid right? :)
