Books - First day of class

Is it necessary to bring the books on the first day of class?

doesnt matter, you dont have to bring books at any time

Thanks! That’s good to know.

I personally do take books to classes that i am for certain not going to takes notes in.

otherwise, no point really…most classes do not have requirement.

That’s not necessarily true. While you don’t have to have the books on the first day of class, there might be days in which you will be required to bring your book. Most professors are very understanding about how long it takes for students to go out and get everything they need for each class. However, you’d do well to start looking around for low prices for the books you will need about a week before school starts.

Also, consider that many people sit through the first week of class and then drop it. As a result, many people refrain from buying textbooks for classes they aren’t entirely sure they are going to endure for the entire semester.

Personally, never brought books to class. Most time it was either a note pack that the professor was selling at a local copying store or I would print lecture notes from LSS. Also for some of the more popular classes, there are books on reserve in the library.

if you are in an enormous class like intro to stat, precalc or calc, english comp, bio 1, gen psych… basically any class that is in a lecture hall almost all the time you do not have to bring your book. Remember that during the first week of class you can add/drop any class for whatever reason without penalty so it makes no sense for professors to assign things during this week and most wont.

In fact, I would recommend not even buying books until you are in the class and have a feel for it. Classes like Stat or Calc have their books in the library and you might NEVER use them except for a few times and during those times you can just go to the library and check them out for a few hours. In a good number of my freshman classes I almost never used the book and only resorted to notes. Im not saying dont buy books for classes… but figure out if the book you need is on reserve before buying it and talk to the professor to make sure you will really need the book. And you dont know if you will end up even liking that class or professor and might consider dropping/adding another section (maybe different book) or delay the class entirely (assuming you need it, you may just take a different one if its gen ed). This is how people end up wasting money when they buy books beforehand assuming they will not add/drop at all. Plus if you arent in gainesville yet you might not have checked out the used book bookstores too.

A sidenote too: if you go to a used book bookstore and they offer the service of looking at your schedule and getting the books for you from the shelves (most do this) take them immediately to the professor and make sure its the right one. So many used bookstores have outdated books they want to get rid of and will sell to you because it was used for the same class/instructor but from a different semester; the book may have changed.

Buy books online too!! Check out Amazon.com. But if you need a code/subscription that normally comes bundled with the book factor that in too.

okay im done… just wanted to fyi the entering freshies out there about the many ways the bookstores try to rob you.

you guys never need books for calc or stats? x.x

but yes if you check the library, yes they are there most of the time for 2 hour loan or something…

and UF’s library is member of something or the other where you can view textbooks as an ebook, this option is there for many books.

No you dont need the stats book. The actual hardcover book. You definetly need the softcover workbook but thats much cheaper and you can buy it alone.

And for calc… yeah… it can be done… i checked out that book soo many times.

I haven’t taken statistics yet, but for calculus you definitely need the textbook. It seems like it would be really annoying to check out the book from the library every time you needed it to do homework.
