Books for Math 1210 Applied Calc

There is only one book required for Math 1210, but two other items are listed. If I get the required book used, will it have everything I need? What about the web assign that is included with items 2 & 3? It just seems like item 2, though not required, actually has more things included.

I'm confused!!

Applied Calculus For Mgrl, Life & Soc Sci, Required - $192.00 new, used $70.00

Applied Calculus + Webassign + Start Smart Guide - Part of Set - $220.70 new

Enchanced Webassign Access Card - Part of Set - $73.70 new

You will need webassign, that is how you will get a homework grade and do all homework.

You can buy the textbook used and the webassign card separately as a new item. They are each available at a good price through amazon. Or, if you want to spend lots of money, you can buy the package together new at the UVa bookstore.

If you are taking both semesters of applied calc, buy the book, don’t rent it, because I believe the same textbook is used for both semesters.

To make sure you are getting the right versions, use the ISBN code from the UVa bookstore textbook website. Go to Amazon’s “advanced search” and type in the ISBN without dashes. It will bring you right to the correct edition, etc.

Once you sign up as a student with a virginia.edu email address, you can get free 2 day shipping from Amazon for one year. That benefit can be tied to an existing Amazon account.

@charlieschm are you required to take 2 semesters of Calc 1210?

The book required for the section I am in (012) is not the same as the required book in some of the other sections. In several other sections, it is the more expensive one (Applied Calc+WebAssign+StartSmart Guide) that is required.

If I buy the required book for section 012 (Appl Calc for Mgrl, Life, Social) and the web assign access, would I be just as well off to buy the App Cal + Web + Guide that is required in the other sections? In other words, is it the exact same book with the only difference being the additional things that come with it?

Sorry for the confusion. I’m just used to having my books waiting for me on the first day of school!!

Does anyone know if we need to purchase the “Start Smart Guide” as well?

I was able to find the textbook at a much cheaper price and I’m currently looking for the webassign card, but I cannot find the guide anywhere online (aside from the bookstore’s package). Is it absolutely necessary that I purchase this?

In answer to a question above about whether to take one or two semesters of calc, it depends upon the program you are in.

For some majors, the only reason that calc is required is because the program requires stat 2120, which has calc listed as a prereq.

Other majors want 2 semesters of calc, and may list that as a prerequisite for a required mid-level class. According to an email I received from the chemistry department, they are updating their website to reflect strongly recommended prerequisites vs. required ones.

For some BS and other technical degrees, they want the more advanced sequence of calculus, not 1210. For example, the BS chemistry degree has tougher requirements than the BA chemistry degree.

In answer to a question above, it looks like the “Start Smart Guide for Students” is simply a set of some printed pages that provide basic instructions on how to use the online Calculus materials. The online materials are accessible through the purchase of the WebAssign card. I’m guessing the Smart Guide is not needed. There almost has to be an online help feature if there are questions, since the Access Card is used across the country by many colleges. Anyone have an opinion?

The WebAssign Access Code is needed, and apparently is only good for one semester. It appears that the same card is sold for use in various courses - you just enter your information on the course you are taking when you activate it.

Looking up the ISBN for the actual textbook, the publisher noted “Bringing powerful resources to students’ fingertips, the text’s exciting array of supplements, including Enhanced Web Assign, equips students with extensive learning support to help them maximize their study time.”

So if it already comes with Web Assign, why do we have to buy another?

Up until recently, the UVa bookstore website was not always clear that there was a choice between buying a bundle or buying the parts separately. That is your choice for many classes - to buy everything new together, including the textbook and access card, or buy them separately. It usually is best to buy a used copy of the textbook (which you will probably be able to resell, which will mean a lower net cost to you than if you rent it), and a separate new access card.
