Books for SPAN 2020--question for those who have taken it

My son placed into SPAN 2020. We were looking at the text list at the UVA bookstore and are stunned by the prices. Three of the four listed appear to be required, with the fourth being recommended. The total new price comes to ~$415, and the used price isn't that much better. Do students really use ALL these materials? If not, which are most important? Thanks in advance for the input!

In this instance, as in others, when ordering textbooks be sure to see if they are part of a set. He will need the following:

English Grammar
Pasajes: Lengua (this is the main textbook)-A used copy is just fine. They use this one for 2010 and 2020 so if a student is taking 2010 you will use it again. In your case he only needs it for one course, hence why a used one might be the way to go.
Quia 7th for Pasajes Lengua (this is the online homework access)

The first two can be used and/or purchased online at another source. The last one needs to be purchased at the UVa bookstore. If you get them all at UVa with the textbook used you are looking at $115. Which is probably a better pill to swallow than $415 as you were originally thinking.

Hope this helps!

That will be much more reasonable, thanks for the info.

Yes, for many classes, there is a textbook and an internet access card. You can buy them separately or as a new set - the UVa bookstore website until recently did not make that clear. You can buy the textbook used and the access card separately new. Both are usually much cheaper through Amazon. You can use the ISBN number from the UVa bookstore site to make sure you have the right versions on Amazon’s “advanced search”.
