if you’re smart textbooks won’t cost that much, but it depends on the major. Even so, many books in your core class can be found online, borrowed, or acquire in pdf form. I dont think I spent more than $150 in textbooks my first year

Thanks for the information.

Where do students buy books? Book store? Amazon? Does one course only require one text book? When do students buy books? At the beginning of each quarter?

How much does it cost if you buy a new one from the university book store? E.g., Calculus text book? Does Amazon carry some text books required by core courses?

As a first year, my son spent around $1000 on books. Definitely depends on the major. His advanced Physics book was $350. Lots of small novels are needed for most Hume courses. He did get lucky with his honors Calc book, and bought a used one through a housemate.

The only time students probably need to buy from the bookstore is for first quarter, as they don’t register for class until the end of O-week, and it is too late to send off for shipping books from websites. We used Amazon for all other books for 2nd and 3rd quarter, and saved about 20%-30% from bookstore prices. There are other sites to buy books at even more savings, but I found it often took longer to ship. Make sure to order book using the bin#, so as to get the correct edition used in class.

Once your D has registered for classes, you both can access the books needed from this: my.UChicago.

For spending money, don’t forget that dining halls are closed on Saturday nights. There are plenty of choices for the students to find a meal, but some of the choices can get expensive.
