Books, Smokin' Notes, and TZ

First of all, I want to know if I should buy the books for the following courses.

ECO2023 - Microeconomics
CGS2531 - Problem Solving w/ Computers

I've been reading a lot of RateMyProfessor reviews and I've seen an overwhelming lean towards don't bother buying the books for these classes but I'd like to know from CC users who have taken these business tracking courses.

I've also seen a lot of references to Tutoring Zone and Smokin' Notes. Can anyone explain these two services in detail to me?

smoking notes is a thorough review packet published by a company outside of UF for a number of different classes. tutoring zone is an off campus tutoring center affiliated with smokin notes.

i wouldn’t recommend skipping the book and flying blind until 6 days before the exam when smokin notes is released, but it can be done. if this is your first semester, get the book, and if it turns out you dont need it, then lesson learned.

you shouldn’t let being stingy impact your ability to learn and do well in a class. thats your number one priority.

Agreed.

I didn’t intend to just rely on some purchased notes. I would study just the same with relevant class material, but I’d rather not waste my money buying a book when the professor bases all his examinations on lectures and other material instead of the book itself.

I’m actually taking both of this classes in the Fall! I am also wondering the same thing. I think for CHS2531, we have to buy some $75 online code anyways but I really don’t want to spend a lot of money on those textbooks. I checked on Chegg.com though and the CHS2531 textbook is $25 so I might as well just rent it.

Hi BeKindRewind!

TZ offers help in both of your classes! We give you notes, practice problems, and a comprehensive review session before all of your exams. If you miss the actual review, you can come in and watch it on a DVD!

Obviously we aren’t a trade-off for going to class, but we offer a 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Check us out at TutoringZone for more information!

Oh no, it’s become sentient.

For books, wait till class starts, if you feel comfortable without them, don’t buy them. No reason to buy them now, especially if you’re in doubt.

^
“oh no it’s became sentient”

I just laughed so hard.

But seriously has anybody used TZ here. I was thinking about using it CHM2045 and MAC2312 as those are supposedly “weed out classes”. How are the weekly review sessions too? They seem pricey, but maybe worth it.

i’ve heard really excellent things about TZ. mostly from people who skip all of the lectures and dont have any idea what they’re doing.

I’ve used TZ for Calc. Their reviews are amazing before an exam. But then again I don’t consider myself to be the best studier, so the little cram sesh was helpful, but if you’re confident in your studying skills throughout the semester they really aren’t revealing anything new except for a shortcut or little mnemonic here or there. A lot of professors and TAs talk down about their services, but the staff is well qualified, friendly, and humorous, and $25 for 4-5hours and the review packet seemed to be an excellent deal.

However, I do have friends that have purchased the complete TZ package where they have weekly study reviews and such and I find that to be a bit much, especially when there are sufficient resources on campus like the CLC, Broward Teaching Center, etc. for weekly tutoring.

used it for chem, ochem, and physics.

Never did the weeklys because theyre expensive! I found myself getting the same grades as the people who did this, but may be the really needed to constantly work on the material with a tutor.

I used to be lazy when it came to studying on my own freshman and sophomore year. TZ definitely helps dumb down a lot of the concepts so you can do well on the exams. Of course, think of it as a supplement. Also, dont expect to leave TZ review sessions ready to take an exam, you have to take that packet home and study.

I also know quite a few people who attend classes, do all the work in the class, and then go to TZ for supplement review…these people usually are getting the highest marks in class.

If you find yourself not doing well after a quiz or exam- I recommend TZ.
