I am looking for books which I can read to increase vocabulary for GRE.
I am not looking for GRE training book (e.g. Barron).
Now I am reading TIME magazine to increase my vocabulary.
Which books or magazines do you recommend for increasing vocabulary?
Thank you. :)

I highly recommend ‘Word Power Made Easy’ by Norman Lewis. ISBN-13: 978-0671741907. It helped me boost my vocab by about 1000 words. It also permanently embedded Latin roots in my memory. The author has a very easy writing style. Be sure to solve every exercise until you get it right. Beyond that, Barron’s 3500 word list would be perfect. Since you will be able to trace Latin roots, the word list will be significantly easier to memorize.

Read the New Yorker! If you understand their highbrow prose then you’ll be good at catching sarcasm on the GRE.

While I hated this book (didn’t finish it) it’s got tons of unnecessary large vocab words: [Amazon.com: The Magicians: A Novel (9780670020553): Lev Grossman: Books](http://www.amazon.com/Magicians-Novel-Lev-Grossman/dp/0670020559)

Barron’s list of 300 High Frequency Words and 3500 Complete Words. If you know the 3500, you are almost guaranteed an over a 750 (assuming you are competent in reading comp).

These lists are found in their How To Prepare for the GRE book.

Jeez…

These things are not really even up for debate. There are some books that are just head and shoulders above the pack in terms of quality.

Math: Nova Prep Course or Nova Math Bible (although a bit excessive)

Verbal: ETS Big Book
Vocab: Kaplan book or flashcards with 500 words

This isn’t a matter of preference. These are the best books. Period.

Anyone who wastes their time memorizing 3500 words has no understanding of efficiency or the law of diminishing returns.

Wow MasterMoe, way to be a pretentious prick. You could’ve easily left out your derisive comments about the many suggestions made here.

Btw, 500 words will not get you 700+ on the verbal section…that requires you to be in the 95-98th percentile. No one asked about efficiency, just places to get vocab. Ask anyone whose gotten more than 700 on the verbal and they’ll tell you they memorized more than that number of words.

Definitely New York Times- I’ve caught a couple of GRE words in there that I’ve been studying, especially in opinion section written by contributors (not the regular columnists).
