Books/Videos

What are some of the best books or videos on USNA(admission, history,etc...)?

fpmid07,

My daughter has found that the book, Naval Academy Candidate Handbook, How to Prepare, How to get in, How to Survive, by William Smallwood, has been really helpful.

<a href="http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0929311051/qid=1121786947/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-1431754-4789507?v=glance&s=books%5B/url%5D">http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/0929311051/qid=1121786947/sr=1-1/ref=sr_1_1/104-1431754-4789507?v=glance&s=books</a></p>

Daughter is just a rising Junior in High School, so some others on here who've actually made it through the whole process might have better ideas.

Get the National Geographic DVD called "Surviving West Point". Even though it's about WP rather than the Naval Academy, it will give you some great insight into life at a service academy. Cheapest price if you can't get it from a library is at deepdiscountdvd.com.

Cougar,
The Naval Academy Candidate Handbook was an invaluable resource. How to Get an ROTC Scholarship also provided us with valuable information. They were a good investment because she received an appointment to USNA in addition to the NROTC scholarship. Good Luck!

would have to agree with the Candidate handbook and Surviving West Point DVD....the first a great place to start and the second a good insight into what to expect....don't overlook the naval academy catalogue and "Brief Points" (geared towards plebe parents but good information for others as well)
best of luck-

USNA09mom,

I'm assuming you mean: How to Win Rotc Scholarships: An In-Depth, Behind-The-Scenes Look at the Rotc Scholarship Selection Process. It looks like a good book, so I just ordered it off Amazon for the daughter.

I think some of the best advice she's gotten is it's okay to shoot for the Academy but keep all your options (NROTC, OCS after College, etc.) open.

Cougar,
That's the one. The chapter on interviews and appendix listing ROTC programs/universities according to branch of service was certainly helpful.
We also bought the National Geographic DVD "Surviving West Point" and read Absolutely American, though my daughter only was interested in NAVY.

For fun, read The Return of Philo T. McGiffin by David Poyer. It gives a wonderful idea of what plebe year is all about.

Thanks for the advice, even though it was fpmid07 who first asked. My daughter is in Colorado Springs right now at a Civil Air Patrol Cadet Leadership School, so I'm hoping to have some more motivational/informational stuff ready for her when she gets home (Boise, Idaho). This should help loads.

thanks everyone this all looks like real good stuff I will further look into
