I'm looking for recommendations on books to read just for when I'm bored and to keep my mind/ideas flowing. I'm open to all topics pretty much...maybe some crime kind of books. Throw me your suggestions.

I really enjoyed The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold. That's kind of crime-like, I'd tell you but I'm not sure how much you want to know about the story.

I'm sure 100 other people will suggest this same book, but I'll suggest it anyway. I recently read Freakonomics and found it enthralling. Really makes you look at things in a new light.

freakonomics is a good beach read, i agree

if you're looking for more scholarly fare, look no further than Socrates in 90 Minutes. Entertaining!

I liked Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamonde (check the spelling of his last name... not sure if I got it right). :) Really good reading, especially if you like history or evolutionary biology or sociology. As for me, I love evolutionary biology AND sociology, so it was VERY interesting to me. Even if you don't particularly care for any of those three, it's a GOOD read.

ALSO! A really interesting read is Complicatons: A Surgeon's Notes on Imperfect Science by (Dr.) Atul Gawade. It's especially good for anyone going the medical path, but even if you aren't, it's REALLY fascinating.

Those two were just the TOP two books I read this year. Love them. Absolutely fascinating topics.

Fierce Invalids Home From Hot Climates by Tom Robbins

I liked Kite Runner

I second Guns, Germs, and Steel. The Kite Runner is also a quick read with a decent plot.

Catch-22 by joseph heller

A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson. It makes science more accessible than you'd think possible.

Thanks for the suggestions, I'll be sure to check those out. How about some recommendations on books similar to "I Hope They Serve Beer In Hell" By Tucker Max and "The Collegehumor Guide to College: Selling Kidneys for Beer Money, Sleeping with Your Professors, Majoring in Communications, and Other Really Good Ideas"

oh, funny books.

pick up some comic book collections (boondocks, etc)

These are my favorite books. All very similar (satire 4tw).
1984-George Orwell
Brave New World-Aldous Huxley
Catch 22-Josheph Heller
One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest-Ken Kesey
Slaughterhouse 5-Kurt Vonnegut
Fahrenheit 451-Ray Bradbury
The Giver-Lois Lowry

Planning on reading We by Yevgeny Zamyatin next

Kite Runner!!!!!!!!!!!!

A Prayer for Owen Meany (not really a quick read though)

I recently read Jennifer Government, which is really good. It reminded me a little of 1984, so if you like that type of read, I recommend it.

I enjoyed: An empire of wealth, Manhunt, Jim Crowe's Children, Bourne Ultimatum, Nickel and Dimes (quick read, but not all the informative), and we wish to inform you that tomorrow we will be killed with our families.

A History of Knowlege

actually required pre-college reading assigned to me by my dad.

It is most definitely NOT a quick read (see title), but it is not dull or dry. And I know my IQ is rising with every page :)

I enjoyed A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius (Dave Eggers) a lot.

candide.....
