Books You're Using For Summer Sat Prep!

Any books you're using over the summer that I can check out, especially for CR. Thanks in advance !

In general, it’s a good idea to get the SAT Study Guide (aka Blue Book) for practice tests. I will be using it book a lot to study this summer.

For CR, most people suggest Direct Hits Volumes 1 and 2 to build vocabulary.

There’s 19 questions on vocabulary and really it’s a hit or miss type of question. Instead of studying long lists of vocab words, I suggest you study on root words. Gruber’s SAT workbooks have a great guide on this. That said, studying for vocab words can be helpful to some extent but if you don’t have time, time can be spent better elsewhere.

I’m using the Blue book second edition

I think I have every sat prep book known to man (thanks mom). But I only really use the blue book, Direct hits and occasionally the Princeton review.

Well, obviously you should take some practice tests too, but if you want to get close to an 800 on CR, it is IMPERATIVE to use “The Essential 500 Words” by Larry Krieger. Take it from me, I studied 25 practice tests in addition to 2 large SAT books and around 1000 words. Barron’s 500 usually score around 2-3 words on the SAT, and so does Princeton’s. But Essential scored EVERY SINGLE correct word on my SAT (around 20 or so). I just got a 770 on Critical Reading (June Sunday 2013 SAT). And his book scored over 15 words on most SAT’s, not only mine.

I wholeheartedly agree with avitron142. Larry Krieger’s “The Essential 500 Words” was the biggest reason for my 770 on the critical reading portion of my SAT. The best part of this book is that it doesn’t force you to memorize countless, meaningless words that have little chance of appearing on the test. Instead, it gives you the words that occur the most in SATs, and teaches it in a fun and interesting way.

Definitely get this book if you want to improve your score. Its the only one with concrete positive results.

I’m using all the CB materials. Maybe I’ll review gruber’s for geometry (last time had difficulty to complete the questions). Otherwise, I’ll just do 30 CB practice tests. A practice test in one sitting and in 70% of time.

I agree with Thalaiva and avitron. Students using the Essential 500 are scoring very well
