Books

Buying books from the school bookstore, as most of you know, is super expensive. Where do you guys buy/rent your books from?

I’m a Lit major so I didn’t need any textbooks for this year. I needed 50 novels, and I got them all off Amazon - most of them were £3-£4.

Amazon for me, thats if I buy the books at all.

^
If you don’t buy the books, what do you do to keep up with the class?

Many classes, if not most early in your undergrad years, don’t require the book at all. I would say about half of my college classes so far ever needed me to actually use the textbook I bought

I managed to find all my books on craigslist last semester. They were all in awesome condition, so I’ll probably take that route again next semester.

My bookstore had used ones for pretty cheap, i.e., $30 instead of $80. For next semester I might check out amazon or Chegg though.

Amazon, Bigword.

Each of these sites is the starting point for finding books sold by large firms (like Chegg), smaller booksellers and individuals. Both sites are great, but you need to check out each sellers history before you buy. Some people have had problems with individual sellers.

DD has ordered books from Amazon Fulfillment, smaller booksellers and listed students - all have gone smoothly. One small bookseller even refunded money when the book arrived 2 weeks late (a small humanities book that got temporarily lost in the mail somehow).

The past 2 semesters: Sem 1 Sem 2
University Bookstore Price (used) - $585 $487
On-line Booksources (new & used)- $236 $263

Resale proceeds - $63 $ 73

Net Out of Pocket - $173 $190

Total Saved $349 $224

No. Classes 7 5
No. Books 14 12

In both sem 1 and 2, one book could only be bought thru the university as they were custom editions. DD sold these to friends rather than the bookstore, as she got a bit more for them.

Already ordered 3rd semester books: savings will be less as 2 of her 8 books are custom university editions ($100+ each).

(DD and I have kept a spreadsheet of all expenditures this year, hers and ours. We are trying to set up a budget for next year as the tuition is going up alot - 1/3 in regular annual increases, 2/3 because the business college has supplemental tuition)

I get mine from upperclassmen I know or if it’s a class that doesn’t have a ‘continuation’ class the next semester (ex, Ochem 1 and 2) I rent it through Chegg. Lab manuals are bought at my bookstore because that’s the only place to get them.
