Books

What do you think about used vs new books??

new books are a waste of money, it's better to just buy the nicest looking used book you can

is there any way I could get old books other than contacting the bookstore?
can I get the books when I get to the campus or should i pre-order?

I believe that you can order new or used books online. If you prefer used- you may want to personally select them to avoid books with missing pages or too much writing.

I buy them when I get there, or did anyway. You can get them from pitt's bookstore or a store called "got used" which indeed sells all used books that's on Forbes across from Quaker Steak and Lube and Kiva Han.

How do you guys even know what books to buy? I still haven't gotten anything from my teachers etc...

You just go to the bookstore when you arrive and all of the books are organized by subject and section. Take you schedule with you and buy your books then.

Or, you can use the book reservation form and the Book Center will pull them for you to pick up when you arrive.

Just don't be surprised if all of your books are not there. Sometimes if the prof is not determined until the last minute or if the prof doesn't place his book order early, you may have to get them after classes start.

My other college-kids' experience has been that often the prof hasn't ordered the books, or once they get to the first day of class. . . the books have changed, or they find out they don't need to purchase all of the books.

It is convenient to do it all beforehand ,but it's not necessarily the smooth process it sounds like at first.

Pitt's program is pretty good for preordering. I actually know that professors are required to have their orders in very early because starting today the bookcenter is starting to put together the reserved books ( I have friends who work there). Also, at least for physics, as of the end of spring they all ready knew that they were changing their books, same with portuguese.

go to campus bookstore....they find all ur books for u, and u will usually save around $50 for all ur books, if not more...its on fifth, past the Medical Arts Building

also, if you meet and become friends with upperclassman via facebook, aim, whatever, you can always ask them to borrow their books, or buy it off them for alot cheaper (like $30 a book)....I know some freshman coming to Pitt this year, and I have almost all the books they need, so I am saving them over $300 haha.....and im asking all my friends to borrow their books too for classes im taking that they already took.

Guys help me out. Where can I get a book list? I forgot to do it when I was at the Pittstart session. I need to know where to get a list!

i don't know my booklist yet. i believe the posts above says we can get them at the arrival..also they said the books change all the time so.. don't panic!

If you are planning to buy your books at the Pitt Bookstore, you can just get them when you move in.

<a href="http://www.pitt.edu/%7Ebookctr/textbooks/textbooklist/textbooklist.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.pitt.edu/~bookctr/textbooks/textbooklist/textbooklist.htm</a></p>

I'm heading out to pitt in the fall too. Having already had a year of college, I gotta tell you, don't freak out about buying the books...you aren't expected to have them for the first several classes, and after you read the syllabus, talk to students who have taken the class, you may decide that you don't even need to buy one or two...some profs end up barely using the book at all, which makes it just a waste of money in the end. You can always photocopy chapter or use the library's copy, share one w/ someone...
