Books?

Hey guys,

I am an incoming freshmen and I was hoping to be able to buy my books online at Amazon or Half instead of the bookstore. I was just wondering when we are going to know what books correspond to our classes. Is it already available somewhere? Because the latest "news" on the UCI Bookstore website is that the Summer Session II course books are searchable online, but the site doesn't even mention Fall 08. I am just worried that if I don't order them really soon I will be forced to buy them from the bookstore.

buy them from past students of course

Im an incoming computer science and enginerring major and i am wondering how much does it cost for books for my first year? Estimate?
I have math, physics, writing, and cse if this helps. Thanks

i had chem writing math physics and bme

chem used the same book, writing used one for a quarter, math required a new one every quarter, and physics used the same book over the year. bme didn't need a book.

lets see

chem 35 (ebayed)
math 50 (bought from past student), 7 (cheapo book)+10 (borrowed it from jason for 10 bux), 45 (bought from past student)
physics 176 (according to book.uci.edu but i don't think i paid this much, gatta buy from the bookstore for the package that comes with webassign)
physics lab 25 (from the bookstore)
chem lab 40 (for goggles, lab apron, and lab notebook, f the bookstore)
writing 0 (i traded my math book for my friend's writing book. i think she paid 12 bucks for it or something.)

comes down to less than 400 dollars including some lab crap. If you are more creative with your trades i'm sure you can get cheaper stuff. if you are lazy, prepare to spend a lot of money.

i don't think i paid that much since for the physics book i used a more recent price. also, i can still sell some of my books to make some money back.

excuse the incoherence of this post, I didn't really think when i wrote this.

400 for the whole year? thats not bad. Do you know if you can buy books early even before the first day of class? Does the UCI catalogue have the names of books need for every class?

yes you can buy books earlier.

i don't recommend it, wait til the prof tells you what he REALLY wants or doesn't want.

for example: for chem lots of ppl dished out 130 bucks for the new edition of the chem book, while i got the old one for 35, and it made no difference to the class.

Welcome to the UCI Bookstore

navigate to coursebooks, but right now fall coursebooks are not up.

when does the fall list of coursebooks usually come up?

and wait are you serious, it might say you need a new edition and then you find out you can use an old one? thats horrible

i dont want to wait till classes start to buy my books, because then id have to get them at the bookstore. i want to buy them on half.com!

^^ I have the same dilemma. And at least for my first quarter I don't know any students to buy books off of x.x

ratroll, try facebook, tehre is a group for that on there

milana, just get it from other students OFC.

shoe factory...

ofc?

of course.

try forum.zotters.org

i personally use the facebook group to find books ( i forget the name of it, but if you need it, ask and i can post it when i get home)

Book requirements are most likely going to come out August 25th. The website says you can start pre-ordering them at that time.

Anyone know the specific date that the books will be posted? so we know what to buy.

sry to steal ur thread but do any of you know if theres a specific place/store to buy used books other than buying directly from a past student.. thanks a lot

Half.com and Amazon.com: Online Shopping for Electronics, Apparel, Computers, Books, DVDs & more are the most popular ones I know of.

on the list of coursebooks on the website, do they post the isbn's anywhere?

yea, i'd like to know that too. I'm taking this EECS class and the book the professor requires comes in several versions.

the solution to all your woes

that trick doesn't work for books that are part of a package like the math books where there are the words "pkg" next to the course name.

I'm trying to buy from a past student but I'm unsure if I should go with it. Does the edition really matter?

(I'm buying bio 93 & chem books)
