We would like to purchase used books, prior to arriving at Pitt. How can we find out what books are required for which classes? Is there a master list somewhere? Thanks for help!

I tried to email the professors asking what books they used but most of them replied something along the lines of “Go to the Book Center” or they didn’t respond (-_-). I was able to find out the names of some of the texts and their authors through the department websites, however.

Go to the Got used bookstore site. They have the 2009 Fall semester up although some of the books may not be there yet. My son has all his books except for one lab manual which I think may be published especially for the class so he will have to pick it up from the bookstore. It is MUCH cheaper to get them through amazon or half.com.

They will release the master list via the university’s bookstore but last year, I noticed that all the “cheaper” copies of the textbooks (on Amazon) were snapped up by then.

That is a pretty good site to use, thanks.

You are welcome :)

The earlier you order your books – the cheaper they are. Once everyone knows the title/edition, all the cheap copies are usually gone.

I have had luck with Amazon and Half. You might want to ask if you are buying an international or US edition, if it matters to you, as you will run across quite a few IE’s.

Just ordered 2 books on-line curious to see the condition. If anyone else has any advice please post.

We usually just visit the Got Used on Forbes and load up!

Since they haven’t posted the master list, I used the gotused website to find out which books I need for class (select the term, course, section and it tells you the required texts), and then I found all the books cheaper on Amazon. All in all, I saved quite a bit of money.

2bbbmom, the condition of online books I have ordered have always been pretty accurate.

Here’s a website I like a lot. D isn’t in college yet, but I go there for many of my book purchases. It’s fetchbook.info. They don’t sell anything. They are a clearinghouse for booksellers -new and used on the web. Half, amazon, etc. are listed there.

My best get was for a paperback that my friend bought locally for $16 plus tax. I got it new, shrinkwrapped for $1 plus postage. Generally, I save in the range of 40 to 50 pct.

are most classes using ebooks now?
i am pretty sure both my biology and economics class are using ebooks
