I've been searching the web relentlessly for cheap, used textbooks. Every site I've come across has books that match the school bookstore's used prices. My books are expensive because I am a science major. I am wondering if the "used" condition from my school store is like new? Or are most books obviously worn, frayed, and marked?

Most bookstores will not buy back books that are obviously damaged. For me, I know I have sold back books extensively marked in pencil, but the reason I write my margin notes and do my underlining in pencil is so if someone doesn’t want my notes they can simply erase them. If you are able to go into the bookstore to buy the books though, you can usually pick through the used books and find the one that is up to your standards.
