Bootcamp or Virtual Machine for running Windows

I’m a transfer student into the college of engineering at Texas A&M. As a diehard Mac user I just recently picked up a 15" MacBook Pro with the 2.5 Intel i7, 16GH ram, and 512 SSD. I am aware I need to use Windows to run many of the engineering programs but I don’t know which to go about it. I prefer the Mac interface so using a virtual machine like parallels would be nice, but will I take a major hit on performance doing so? Or would it be better to just dual boot for the sake of performance?

Every time I’ve used parrellel on my mac the performance is significantly messed up, I also set up bootcamp. I can tell you that I get by far better performance out of bootcamp
