My parents and I have decided to investigate doing a pg year at a boarding school to become more prepared academically and especially socially for college.
I wanted to know with my stats what schools would be realistically worth investigating:
GPA: 3.61 W
APs: AP Calculus AB (4), AP Spanish Literature (senior yr), AP Physics 1 (senior yr), AP Statistics (senior yr)
ACT: 34 composite (34 on english, science, and math. 32 on reading)
ECs:
Two years varsity football
Two years varsity baseball
-Two years JV baseball
Two years on debate team (wasn’t fully established until soph. year, when I spent brief period at another school so I was unable to join)
Three years school newspaper
Two years yearbook club
Four years model UN
Participated in sports broadcasting camp each of past two summers
Took a creative writing course at Yale this summer
Took a journalism course at SUNY Purchase
Write for two sports websites outside of school
- Three years writing for sub-site of SBNation
-Two years writing for sub-site of Scout.com
Wrote essay for TeenInk that was named Editor’s Choice
Quick edit: Will not being applying for FA if that’s worth anything
My not-expert guess is that you could be very welcomed at any top schools if their varsity team happen to need your position and you can play for the team. Why don’t you contact coaches at many schools?
You are not calling the schools yet? Time is ticking. Don’t try to figure out what schools to call. Call all of them.
This would be a 17-18 pg. I am considering doing my senior year at a BS, which we have begun investigating, but the more likely scenario is I graduate from my current school this year and pg next year.
@sportsbrand96, what are the key things you’d like to get out of the pg year? Or put differently, what would you hope to be in May 2018 that you won’t be in May 2017? Your ACT is good. Your GPA would suggest, coupled with that score, that perhaps you’ve been a bit of an underachiever, but I think there are plenty of good colleges that wouldn’t be put off by that. Do you want to get bigger and stronger for sports? The answer really depends on why you would do this. And who will take you will also depend on that. If it’s about sports, Lawrenceville could be good.
@gardenstategal The year would mainly be for developing mental maturity for college. I am by no means a “star athlete” in my sports, but I’m almost certain I would play sports if I did a PG year. I am definitely in a good place for my top colleges now, and going directly from HS is still a very viable option, but with a history of social issues and academic underachievement my parents feel a pg year could be beneficial.
I would look at bigger schools, like Lawrenceville, where you can also develop as an athlete as that seems a viable hook for you. It may appear to colleges that the main reason you did the pg year was athletics, and that might not be bad.
I don’t think you need an academics bump. I think a gap year interning / volunteering would be more beneficial.
How do you expect the PG year to help, with your “social issues”?
@thumper1 Mostly adjusting to living and functioning away from home. then again that could also just be a part of college, but I’d like to hit the ground running
