Bored at home during the summer

I'm going to college this year, and I'm tired of spending 10+ hours in front of the computer everyday.
Now, before you tell me to get a job, I got one. Tell me to socialize-- I don't have that many friends. I want to attend random Meetup events, but I don't drive. I'm learning how to drive. I'm hitting the gym, going out with a few friends, but I don't want to exploit my dad, who drives me around. I want to volunteer, but again, no car.
I'm self studying some classes before going off to college, but I'm tired of sitting all day in front of the computer. WHat should I do?

I feel your pain. I’m starting up at a Uni this fall, but I don’t start until late september since we’re on the quarter system >;( such a long wait, I don’t know how I can wait three more months, i want to start nooow! Lol! I graduated from my community college a couple weeks ago so now im bored out of my mind. I hang out with friends atleast which kills times but i only have a few good friends I hang with. I did get a volunteer gig tho but that doesn’t start for another couple weeks.
Funny 'cuz I bet during midterms/finals week I’ll be wishing I had nothing to do again! What school are you going to ?

I’m passing the time by studying for 1 of my classes (Physics) over the summer, so I know I’ll have previewed one of the classes I"m taking.

Is there no reliable public transportation where you live?

Take up some horticulture? A lot can grow in a fwe months time. If you don’t have your own garden, many towns have community gardens that one can join to take part in.

Read about something that really interests you - science, business, animals, biographies, countries? If there’s no local library, most B&Ns won’t even kick you out if you show up a couple days a week to read a specific book. Just sit in a far corner and be quiet and they don’t bother you.

Is it too late to register for summer classes at your local CC - even it’s it not for credit?

Take up a new musical instrument or practice one you already have. Whenever I’m bored and tired of everything I’ll just pick something up and noodle a bit, maybe learn some warm-ups/tricks or a simple cover tune. If I feel like exerting any mental energy, I might learn a more difficult song, start writing a new one, or editing one I’ve already begun writing.

If you don’t think music is quite your “thing,” try writing stories, poems, plays/screenplays or comics. Also try sketching, painting, fashion design, etc. Just something creative. It’ll be good for you.

…and if for some reason you don’t find that any of the creative stuff is satisfying to you, maybe take up some form of computer-based hobby to avoid screen-staring and checking facebook every five minutes? Like learning HTML or how to do cool things with photoshop or something.

More thoughts - bike riding, cooking, martial arts or dance (classes or Youtube instruction if you don’t have a ride), going to concerts ocasionally… you get the idea. Just get up and do something.

What are you majoring in? Get more in depth with that, so you are more ready.

Make sure you have everything prepared. Don’t make last minute plans on the day you plan to go!
Get prepared to leave 100%. Pack your suitcases, etc.

Are you leaving your state/going far for college? Make sure you say bye to everything. You will most likely miss it one time or another.

Get used to basic places near the college, such as supply stores, etc.

Look at clubs your school offers and see which one is interesting, maybe take that up as a hobby.

I mean these are most of the things you do on the computer, but at least these are more productive things than just spending time on the computer. (:

Do things you can only do in your home, before you leave.

You should make something like a bucket list, but instead, a list of things you do before you go to college. It will be fun!

I’m in the same boat as you are!

I play tennis for 2 hours with my brother, and the rest of the day is sitting in front of the computer!
I need to do something productive. I hope to take a couple of clep tests soon… But I’m not getting the motivation to study!

EXACT same boat here.

My dad today told me that in order to pay room and bored partially, I have to file. (He’s a lawyer and has his own firm.) So I’m being forced to spend 4+ hours filing. I wouldn’t mind it if I were A) getting paid and B) it wasn’t for my parents, but I absolutely hate working for them. There’s just something about working for family.

It’s funny, I have a job at school where I do basically the exact same thing and I have no problems with it. Then my dad asks me to do it, and I just hate it.

But yeah. Learn a new skill! Go outside! Do something fun.

I got an internship for the summer! If you can’t intern, volunteer.

Thanks guys for your answers.
I have a job. I schedule myself to cover Calculus, Computer science, prepare stuff for colleges, study Spanish and Chinese, and apply for some scholarship/ essay writing contests. Then I have gym, and/ or morning jog/ exercise. Then I hang out with friends once in a while, mostly on the weekend.
It might sound a lot, but it does get bored. I want to go out there making friends, socializing, party, get wasted even, and my neighborhood is a bore. Hmm… What should I do? I just don’t want to spend time alone.

It’s better to engage yourself in project work. It’s keep you busy and you didn’t get bored. You may use internet to learn lot’s of stuffs. Spending time with parent’s is one which give you real satisfaction.

-raises hand-

Feel ya here. But i’ve been keeping myself busy by doing various major jobs around the house (like putting in a new gaurden in the back) that have been needing to be done and then napping for the rest of the day when its hot (heat and i don’t mix well at all).

Probably because it so routine. Break from the norm of a set schedule. Look up events going on it your town. It’s Summer so usually there’s Farmer’s Markets and other festivals sprouting up. Or if it’s getting hotter in your area, then try something different to fight against the heat - pool, water park, ice rink? As important as it is you can try to take away some time from studying/scholarship research and go do something out from the usual. Invite friends.

Haha I was going to say learn photoshop because that’s what I’m trying to do this summer, but I saw that you want to get off the computer.

Here’s some other things I’m doing to give you some ideas:
-clean up the house - I’m trying to get rid of a ton of stuff we don’t need.
-redecorate the house - I love making the house more pleasant to live in.
-hike, longboard
-plan some small trips with your friends over the summer.
-gather stuff to sell

As for socializing, I’m home after freshman year and it’s basically no partying at all, but I actually don’t miss it that much. You can survive the next few months! I don’t know what to suggest about the partying - if you know of a party happening and you’re welcome to go, then go? Acquire a fake and have a kickback with some friends?
