Bored UM student here- any questions?

I'll do my best to answer.

Or we edit

hmmmm

What did you get for Christmas?

never smoked anything in my life (although AA was the one of the cornerstones of the counter-culture/hippy movement) -- They're random letters because I registered on a laptop and can't type worth a damn on it.

edit: heh...
Tivo -- I had a class during simpsons and often missed Family Guy last semester
Ipod

how are the girls in Ann Arbor??? Does the cold weather make them not try at all to look attractive??? Please let the answers be hott, and no.................

i really hope u r a guy. if not, i apologize if I offended u. I didnt think about that possibilty until after I typed. sorry.

As prestige/academic reputation increase -- overall hotness of girls decrease.

Michigan is relatively smart =/

There are some very attractive girls, but they aren't as common (or as intoxicated) as you'd find at MSU or a directional Michigan school.

...but, then again, homely girls, uhhm large girls, and unkempt foreigners might just be your cup of tea.

I'm mostly joking. There are good lookign girls here, but who is going to look good at the 8:00 AM organic chem class that is being curved to a C+ and determines your future?

Speaking of weed, I've heard that marijuana usage is common at UMich, is this true?

Like I said, I think that's more a remnant of Ann Arbor/UMichigan being remembered as a center of hippy culture, but you will wander by people on Sat night sometimes that just reek of it. If you're stupid enough to want to get high often than Michigan will accomodate you, but it's not as ubiquitous as people seem to think.

We work very hard and we play very hard, but, at least in my circle of friends, it is only beer/liquor.

What about other drug usage?

What are the best dorms?

What do you do in your spare time?

cocaine seemed to be floating around the frats my freshman year, but I haven't seen any of that in awhile--

It's to be expected at any moderately large school. (Yale frat row's most famous coke dealer comes to mind). That, however, is probably 20-30 kids. The freshman class this year was over 5k and the U is over 40k I beleive. It isn't a widespread problem if that's what you're asking. Michigan students are, almost without exception, bright, talanted, and hard-working.

so basically michigan has overall average to ugly girls. that is a real dissapointment. U just ruined my day!!!! j/k

best dorms: Listen carefully...GET ON CENTRAL CAMPUS--WHATEVER YOU DO DON'T LIVE ON NORTH. For the most part, that means south or west quad. You won't regret it. North is a 10 minute busride (plus usually a 20 minute wait for said bus) to go to and from your dorm. S/W quad are a 5 minute or less walk to any of your LSA classes. Frats, houses (and hosue parties), downtown, the bighouse/chrysler/yost and everything worth doing are easily walkable from central campus. They're all a bus (and that wait) from north. Busses are packed and uncomfortable. They stop running late at night (friends have had to stay with me because they lived in north dorm and were stranded on central drunk and alone). East Quad is good too, but it is smaler and usally reserved for specific programs. Honors is housed in South (a HUGE perk). You want central, but most of WQ and SQ are usually filled with sophs who come back and want the prime real estate. Hill dorms are better than north but worse than central. Everything is still walkable, but the walk is 10 minutes longer to the same places.

Just stay off North Campus--trust me.

In your spare time you can do whatever interests you. I'm a huge sports fan. I go to all the football games (even some away games). I'm mostly into hockey, however. I go to all the hockey games, and I'd recommend it to anyone. Civility be damned inside Yost--all bets are off. It's one of the best times you'll ever have. I play intramural hockey which is a lot of fun, too. I also play off campus in a mens league with a lot of my U buddies. I party about every other weekend, but I've been erally concentrating on my grades lately. If you want to party every weekend or even every day for that matter, you'll be accomodated. I manage to have a great time and my GPA is hovering just under 3.9 in LSA. This is all what is so great about the big university. My thing is hockey and I have all the fun I could imagine, but there are also groups, clubs, and social circles for any pursuit you can imagine. You just have to find them.

Yeah I totally agree. You can find a club/group for anything, and if by some miniscule chance that it doesn't exist, you can make one with university funding. For example, I do competitive triathlons, and a new triathlon club is being formed this year through the cycling club. Yes the north campus busses are incredibly painful, especially on weekends, so try to get central. I live in East Quad, which has a SWEET location, but actually only 1/2 the dorm is the RC. I think east quad is the best, as you will meet the most interesting people, the rooms are fairly large, the location is awesome, and it's not incredibly loud. The food can range in any of the dorms to horrible to pretty good, but it just depends on the day. There is for the most part a work hard play hard atmosphere, and yes, should you choose to rock the ganja, plenty of opportunities will present themselves, including the university-wide hash bash in april. I, like the original poster, am a huge sports fan, but I am from Indiana, so in addition to football, I go to the basketball games, as it is my second religion. I personally thought the 61-60 comeback over Notre Dame was more exciting than the MSU comeback, but I guess with football games, EVERYONE goes, and I've mentioned this before, but people talk obnoxiously loudly on cell phones, don't pay attention, girls complain about being bored, leave early, etc, but with basketball, it's only the people who care about basketball that go, so the atmosphere is intense, but that is college basketball.

Aight F the N. Campus...gotcha

Is housing random? Is there a way to prevent north campus housing?

You are given the option of north or central/hill. The only way to prevent living in north 100% is to sign up for a learning community in one of the central/hill dorms (lloyd hall scholars, rc, etc). Otherwise, check central/hill on the app and submit it as early as possible.

More info on the learning community?

really? when I applied we had the option to check central/hill or north. I guess it's just a matter of semantics, however.
