Boren recommends tuition increase..

7%… ugh.

Ahhh yes, the yearly ritual.

Are “fees” tied to tuition? If tuition increases will there be a corresponding increase in fees?

$153.22/credit hour time 30 credits (?) =$4596.60/year full time tuition in state. That is low for a good state flagship. Or is OU like UMass where tuition is $2000/year and Fees are $11,000/year.

Fees at OU are crazy! there are “mandatory” fees AND “course specific” fees

I found this article http://newsok.com/article/5439087 and it mention that students only pay the academic excellence fee for three years. can anyone confirm that?

So it is sort of like UMass but not as extreme.

@3scoutsmom Wow! What a list of fees. It’s worse than my phone bill.

Yes @TomSrOfBoston I’d say that’s a fair statement. OU also has flat rate tuition for anyone taking 12 or more hours in a semester they are billed at 15 semester hours so you can save some on tuition by taking extra hours.

That’s brutal and it is the biggest increase since 2008!!! Not to mention OU had 4.8% increase last year. As much as my son likes OU, we are urging him to transfer back to instate.

Things I’m reading say 7% increase in tuition and fees. I guess tuition won’t affect NM kids with a 100% tuition waivers but I’d really like to know which fees are increasing, there are just so many fees if it’s 7% increase in all fees we may have a problem.

Also is it a 7% increase in tuition and a 7% increase in fees or 3.5% increase in tuition and 3.5% increase in fees for a total of 7% ?

In Boren’s letter addressed to parents, it stated ’ 7% increase in tuition and fees this year’. I did not expect this would happen when I enrolled our son in OU last year. Two increases in the row and there is no telling if state funding will continue to be cut next year or not.
Ironically Boren said over 300 university positions have been eliminated and he, VP and officers took a voluntary 3% pay cut and yet football coaches got raises?! In his letter he blaimed state government for the damage to the higher education while he did not explain his approval for the football stadium expansion and the pay increases for the coaches.

Warning: contains political rant. Oklahoma is having a major budget crisis because of tax breaks to corporations and the wealthiest citizens in combination with low oil prices and failure to tax oil appropriately during the boon years (as many other oil states did). The Oklahoma legislature does not value public education and made it a very low priority in funding. Our public K-12 schools are in crisis and our public school teachers are among the lowest paid in the country. The legislature chose to give higher education even larger cuts. This is not just OU but all state public higher-ed institutions. Some have suggested that Boren was hit hard because the legislature is punishing him for proposing a $0.01 sales tax increase for public education (I believe to be devoted entirely or primarily to K-12 and particularly teacher salaries). This proposal is a result of the legislature not properly funding education and not seeking any real solutions. The last I heard this proposal is moving forward and likely will be on the ballot in November. Boren is dealing with what he was handed and I won’t criticize how he is handling this. I wouldn’t want his job and the mess that our governor and legislature dumped on him. He has tough choices and no one will like any of them. Just remember, Boren didn’t create this problem. Check out the website for Oklahoma Policy Institute (okpolicy dot org) for lots more detailed information. Even with the increases in tuition and fees, OU is still a very good value, especially for resident students. If you want to keep tuition and fees low, put pressure on the OK governor and legislature to end tax breaks for corporations and our wealthiest citizens and adequately fund public education. If you are an Oklahoma citizen, pay attention to the upcoming elections and the candidates’ positions on education and vote accordingly. Some people are advocating cleaning house of all incumbents, but there are a few that support education and we need to keep them.

@3scoutsmom You cannot add percentages. 7% increase in tuition and fees means 7% in both, or maybe more than 7% in one and somewhat less that 7% in the other so that the total is 7%.

Ack! Just got a letter from the Scholars Office, not only are tuition and fees going up but R&B too! They estimate about $525 more out of pocket expenses for the academic year based on “fees” thankfully the tuition waiver is still 100% but I was unaware that the cost of housing would be going up about $540 too.

Does anyone know when we’ll see the actual fees? I suspect my D’s fee will be higher than average based on the courses she is taking.
