Hi. I posted this on the College Life forum but thought I'd post here too. My D will be looking for a Protestant Church in Boston that is popular with students (she wants to worship at a church with lots of young people, and not one that is full of old people, like us?! ) Do you know of any off-hand? We are non-denominational so as long as the church is Biblically based, she would be fine with it. Thank you in advance, for your help.

Clueless, Like you I am a big plan ahead person but I'm guessing that your daughter will have a lot of fun trying out different local churches and finding one that she's comfortable with. I think the hardest part for my son will be getting up early enough on a Sunday morning; it's a challenge here for us and our service doesn't even start until 10:30. When we go to move my son in in September I am planning to attend a local church with my son and the rest of the family so he'll have one that he knows how to get to.

Does her school have a worship service?

At MIT, we have a group called the Protestant Student Community, which holds services at 11 AM in the MIT chapel; your daughter would be more than welcome to join if she wouldn't mind trekking over to Cambridge on Sunday mornings.

Not sure where your daughter will be living, but Grace Chapel (Lexington) is a well-known ministry in the area:

(Even if she doesn't live near Lexington I suspect that this is the kind of place that would help her find a ride...)

I haven't lived in Boston in 15 years, so this is not based on recent information, but Park Street Church in Boston (a subway ride away from MIT) had a very sizeable college group (at least 100 students, called Seekers) and another group of about 150 grad students and young working people (was called Young Adults). At the time this was definitely Biblically based. This is a Congregational Church.

Here's a arecent article in Christianity Today that talks about the church scene in Boston, and specifically about Park Street Church: http://www.christianitytoday.com/ct/2006/104/32.0.html

Nearly half the church is composed of college students - sounds really popular.

Memorial Church at Harvard would fit the bill if she can get to Cambridge on the Red Line! Or Trinity Church in Copley Square, even just once to check out the amazing architecture!!!

Many schools have transporation to different services...see if her school does because then she will be going with students from her college

I am also nondenominational. When I was in Boston last year for a summer program, I attended Park Street Church several times and loved it. The people were extremely friendly, the sermons were thought-provoking and Biblical, and the building itself has a lot of history. The service I went to was more traditional that what I'm used to in terms of the hymns and prayers but I found that I actually enjoyed the tradition. Good luck to your daughter in finding a church!

Thank you to all, for your responses. It amazes me that there are so many people on this site who are incredibly generous and helpful with their advice. This will give her a head start. Park Street Church will probably be the first one she'll check out. Thanks again!
